It was a great to see a large attendance in the St Patrick’s College Chapel yesterday for the annual mass to commemorate the opening of the academic year. A tradition shared with our colleagues in Maynooth University.

In his homily, President of St Patrick’s, Rev. Dr Michael Shortall, referenced a recent letter from
Pope Leo XIV, Drawing New Maps of Hope, which stated that universities should be places “where questions are not silenced, and doubt is not banished, but accompanied.”

Fr Shortall encouraged all present from across our Maynooth campus to ‘offer one another the confidence to ask questions, the patience to accompany those who are searching, and the generosity to open doors of wisdom for others.’

Full homily can be read at https://frommaynooth.substack.com/p/taking-risks-in-the-arena?r=6huxox&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Thank you to all, including staff, students at Maynooth University and St Patrick’s Pontifical University, Maynooth who celebrated and made the opening of the academic year Mass the special event it is.

Join us for a two-day symposium on Friday 30 April and Saturday 1 May 2027, marking 100 years since the publication of Heidegger’s Being and Time, with an international line-up of speakers.

A century after Being and Time, this symposium returns to the work and its influence on subsequent theology. Its aim, however, goes beyond reception history. It asks whether Heidegger remains, to this day, an unavoidable source and interlocutor for theologians engaging with the continental tradition.

Fr Neil Xavier O’Donoghue, Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Director of Liturgical Programmes at St Patrick’s Pontifical University, has published a new article in Studia Liturgica:

“The Myth of a Celtic Rite: Liturgical Identity in Early Christian Ireland.”

The article challenges the popular notion of a separate “Celtic Rite,” arguing that early Irish liturgy is better understood as a distinctive and creative regional expression of the wider Gallican tradition of the Western Church. It also considers what this early Irish experience might contribute to contemporary thinking about liturgical renewal and inculturation.

Studia Liturgica 56, no. 2 (September 2026), pp. 192–204.
