Year 2 Agriculture in Letterkenny ATU recently did class presentations for 𝙇𝙞𝙖𝙢 on the subject of Silage Fermentation and Silage Additives. It gave them experience in presenting in front of their class. Due to the long winters, particularly in the northwest of Ireland, silage quality is very important in either maintaining production, such as milk production or the liveweight gain of dry stock. Small groups of 2 -3 students usually deliver the presentation while standing in front of the class.

𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙖𝙝 along with the 3rd & 4th year Environmental Management students enjoyed a great morning visiting the beautiful Inch Island.
They started with a talk from local NPWS ranger Janine, outlining the importance of Inch Wildfowl Reserve for wading and migratory birds, enjoyed a spot of bird watching before jumping back on the bus and continuing to the Island.
They were very fortunate to visit the farm of Boyd Bryce, a real pioneer for nature & ecology. Mixing farming 400 ewes with nature conservation, including his freshwater pond constructed over 30 years ago, a native Oak woodland, and conservation practices such as multi species swards.
A real wealth of knowledge, Boyd provided the students with a great overview of a range of habitats and the pressures of invasive species and climate.

This week, 𝙇𝙞𝙨𝙖, 𝙋𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙮 and the 1st yr students visited Keith Roulstons maize crop 🌽
Students got to experience every step of the process; inspection of the standing crop in the field, harvesting ongoing on the day and ensiling of the harvested product back in the farmyard. Students gained a great understanding of the process from start to finish!
