Halloween didnโ€™t start with costumes and sweets. It started with Samhain. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Long before the pumpkins, this ancient Celtic festival marked the end of summer and the start of winter, a time to honour the dead and welcome the dark half of the year. Ireland still keeps those traditions alive through storytelling, music, fire and some seriously good festivals.

Swipe through for a little Irish Halloween history, whatโ€™s on around Limerick, and the parades worth travelling for.

Read what Halloween and autumn traditions can teach us about remembering those weโ€™ve lost:

You donโ€™t have to be a poet to heal through words. โœจ

Our final-year Counselling & Psychotherapy students spent Saturday exploring poetry therapy with guest speaker and ICHAS alumnus Conall ร“ Sรบilleabhรกin. ๐Ÿ’š

Conall is an Accredited Counsellor (APCP), CBT Therapist, Cognitive Behavioural Coach and author of Healing Witness, which inspired much of the dayโ€™s discussion.

Thank you to everyone who took part, and to John Hickey for hosting!

Halloween began in Ireland as Samhain, a night when families set a place at the table for loved ones who had died and gathered around fires to get through the dark months together. Across the world, cultures still use this season to remember, from Dรญa de los Mu***os to All Soulsโ€™ Day to Diwali.

Our new blog looks at what these traditions share and what they can teach us about grief. ๐Ÿ‘‡
