"How my MA in TESOL Helped me Achieve my Aspirations of doing Humanitarian Work" Grace Majestic, Postgrad Playbook.

Grace gives an insightful account of her experience of the MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at University of Limerick, how it transformed her teaching practice, and how it set her on the path toward her humanitarian aspirations.

For Grace, the programme marked a genuine turning point in how she teaches:
"When I look back on my first teaching sessions, I remember I was talking so much and I look to where my classes are now where the students are doing most of the talking, which is amazing. There is so much discussion, it is so much more interactive, and I wouldn't have had the tools or the confidence to have such a student centred classroom without having the support from those supervisors."

Grace chose UL's MA TESOL specifically for its hands-on approach. The opportunity to teach Erasmus students as part of the programme was a deciding factor:
"The fact that we can teach the Erasmus students is one of the reasons why I chose UL's TESOL programme specifically because as teachers, we learn by doing. Getting to dip my feet into the water before going out into the world and having such personalized supervision and feedback each week has just helped me to grow immensely."

Grace is candid about the demands of a master's programme and what got her through:
"At times, I have felt out of my depth. When I did feel this way, I had always reached out to my professors for advice and for help within whatever class it was, or I reached out to my peers, and they would encourage me so much that I was always able to pick myself back up."

When asked whether she would recommend the MA TESOL to others, Grace had no hesitation:
"It is such an accepting program. There's so much to learn and I think that the diversity of learners adds so much to the program itself. I can't say enough about this course."

Why does the study of war and peace still matter today?

In a Q&A, Dr Aaron Donaghy, Director of the MA in Irish and Global Conflict History at UL, reflects on how conflict has shaped the modern world.
From the collapse of empires and the emergence of new nations to the creation of institutions such as the United Nations, NATO and the European Union, the impact of conflict can still be seen today.

As Dr Donaghy notes, understanding the causes, features and consequences of conflict can help us better understand contemporary international affairs. With conflicts continuing across the world, the study of diplomacy, negotiation and conflict resolution remains as relevant as ever.

The MA in Irish and Global Conflict History explores these topics through both Irish and international perspectives, while giving students the opportunity to undertake a research project on a topic of their own choosing.
