Before becoming a lecturer in UL's School of Law, Dr Eddie Keane worked in factories, on building sites, and behind the wheel of a truck. He started college when he was 29, joining the very first class of UL's evening law degree in 1999.

Now, more than two decades later, he's graduated with a PhD examining the legal vulnerabilities of gig economy and casual workers.

"It's never too late," he says. "Most people think by 29 they're settled into a career. But it's never too late to take on a new challenge. The reward is worth the risk."

One of the standout moments of UL Alumni Class Reunion Day 2026 was seeing returning graduates experience the Student Centre for the first time.

Throughout the day, alumni spoke about how impressed they were by the building, its facilities and the vibrant space it provides for students. It quickly became one of the most talked-about stops on the reunion programme.

We're delighted to see the UL Student Centre shortlisted for the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland Public Choice Award.

Voting closes at 5pm on Monday, 15 June. Vote here: https://www.riai.ie/public-choice-award-poll/
