The Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS) Department is a vibrant and rapidly growing department in the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences. The Department's strength lies in the expertise of its staff, the quality of its academic programmes and the applied nature and relevance of these programmes. PESS offers undergraduate and postgraduate academic taught programmes, as well as our ex

tensive research activities including research centres and themes, collaborations and research publications and funded projects. The Head of the PESS department is Prof. PESS is very proud of its national and international reputation, which is reflected in the current international rankings. PESS is ranked in the top 50 (48th) Sports Science School and Departments in the Shanghai Global University Rankings for 2021 and ranked in the top 51-100 in the QS World University Rankings: Top Global Universities for 2022 for ‘Sport-Related Subjects’ the highest ranked Department in UL. The PESS department's mission is to promote and advance learning and knowledge in the area of physical education and sport sciences through innovative teaching and research. Its core aims are leadership in the field within Ireland and a raising of the international profile as a research-led centre of excellence in Physical Education (PE) and Sport & Exercise Sciences (SES). The Physical Education and Sport Sciences department originates from the National College of Physical Education (NCPE), established in 1972, which later became part of Thomond College of Education (1976) and eventually became part of UL (1991).

The Physical Activity for Health Research Centre (PAfH) and the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences are delighted to invite you to Professor Adrian Bauman’s inaugural lecture.

📖 Commercial determinants and influences on physical activity and sport: are they the same as other commercial determinants of health?

Professor Bauman is an internationally recognised public health researcher with over 40 years’ experience in prevention, health promotion and physical activity research.

The lecture and workshop will explore the emerging field of commercial influences on physical activity and sport, including the role that commercial actors play in participation, the environment and policy.
