Researcher Spotlight: Dr John Brown
This week, we’re highlighting Dr John Brown, a researcher at the Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute (MUSSI) and the Department of Sociology at Maynooth University.
Dr Brown's research focuses on democracy, political participation, social movements, and processes of political and social transformation, with a particular interest in Latin America and Southern Europe. His work examines how outsider political parties and popular movements challenge established political systems and contribute to processes of democratisation and social change.
He is Principal Investigator of the Research Ireland-funded project Anti-neoliberal Parties and Popular Movements: Building Democratic Alternatives in Latin America. The project explores the relationship between outsider political parties and social movements in countries including Bolivia and Venezuela, examining how these actors have sought to build alternatives to neoliberal models of governance and create new forms of democratic participation.
Dr Brown's research interests include democratisation, citizenship, state-society relations, political sociology, and post-neoliberal politics. Through his work, he contributes to broader debates on democracy, participation, and the possibilities for political transformation in societies experiencing significant social and economic change.
His work reflects MUSSI's commitment to internationally engaged, interdisciplinary research that addresses complex societal and political challenges.
