It was lovely to meet up with ATU colleagues from 4 campuses today in Connemara as part of a Staff Development hillwalking event. Connections were made and ideas swapped along with some fun, exercise and challenge.

Today we bid a fond farewell to a group of wonderful colleagues as they begin their well-earned retirement.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the enormous contribution each of them has made to ATU and, in particular, to ATU Outdoor Education Courses.

Sheila, Pearse, Hugh, Egbert, Mary, and Ivan, thank you for everything you have given over the years.

We wish you all many happy adventures, good health, and every happiness in this exciting new chapter of life.

We are delighted to see another of our graduates contributing to the 8th International Swift Conference hosted ATU Mayo.
Georgia MacMillan, Director Mayo Dark Skies, Ireland, presented. “Swift Night Shift: Changing Mindsets on Light at Night for Nature”, exploring the important relationship between responsible lighting, biodiversity, and wildlife conservation.
Swifts and dark skies are more connected than many realise. Artificial light at night can disrupt insect populations, navigation, and feeding behaviours that these remarkable birds rely upon.
Georgia’s work highlights how changing our approach to lighting can make a meaningful difference for nature and how communities can play an active role in protecting biodiversity.
The 8th International Swift Conference has brought together delegates from over 16 countries, sharing research, innovation, and conservation initiatives from around the world, and we are incredibly proud to see another ATU Mayo graduate contributing to these important global conversations.

Congratulations to Georgia on her inspiring work and international leadership in environmental awareness and conservation.

ATU Mayo are delighted to be hosting the 8th International Swift Conference this week, with delegates from over 16 countries in attendance.

A particular highlight for us was the presentation from graduate Jaraslaw Mujkusiak, now Ecologist/Ornithologist with TOBIN. Since 2019, Jaraslaw has been leading some of the world’s most advanced research into the breeding biology and conservation of the Common Swift.

The Common Swift is a fascinating little bird, spending almost its entire life in flight, travelling thousands of kilometres across continents, and returning year after year to the nesting boxes at ATU Mayo. Check out our live swiftcams at the link below.

Research and conservation efforts like Jaraslaw’s are helping us better understand and protect one of nature’s most extraordinary birds.

We are incredibly proud to see one of our graduates contributing at such an international level and helping shape the future of ecological research and conservation.
