Arts programme at South East Technological University. The course introduces students to the practice and performance of theatre as well as to the academic study of the area. Students will study major plays from Ireland and abroad but also will have the opportunity to participate in workshops where they can act, direct, and produce their own work as well as the work of major playwrights. A practice-based approach underpins the course pedagogy, which offers students the opportunity to work within a “studio” environment and experiment both with theory and practice. The course builds on strong partnerships with local and regional theatre groups who have all lent their support to the development. Students of Theatre Studies also take other subjects as part of their degree. This exposes students to other disciplines and ways of thinking and there is a strong emphasis in SETU on encouraging dialogue between subject areas. Students will find at SETU a supportive and stimulating study environment where discussion and debate are valued and encouraged. Staff are welcoming and friendly and their approach to teaching is dynamic and enjoyable.

We are planning an exciting line-up of events and trips for Theatre Studies at SETU and English at SETU students this semester. Garter Lane Arts Centre and Theatre Royal Waterford have programmed an excellent array of live theatre shows and screenings. We're really looking forward to sharing the plans with returning students and incoming first years (HELLO!) next week.

Our incoming third years are busy this week and you can catch them in two shows! Toi, toi, toi to our colleague, Helena Walsh Kiely, and all involved in 'September Stories' from Turnaround Theatre, which you can catch at 8pm at Phil Grimes this Friday to Saturday (4th to 6th inclusive). And best wishes, too, to everyone in West Side Story playing at Theatre Royal Waterford until Saturday (5th).

Turnaround Theatre is very excited to return once more to Phil Grimes Pub 4-6 September with a wonderful evening of short plays. Directed by SETU Theatre Studies lecturer, Helena Walsh Kiely, cast and crew members include SETU students Andrea Cowhig and Aliscia Ryan, who play Lorraine and younger Lorraine in Sarah Fahy's moving 'Dear Diary', Evan Sinnott and Taryn Nolan Lawlor who return to Phil Grimes' stage once more as Finn and the usher in Eamonn Dolan's offbeat new play 'Finn and Tilly'. John Moloney (Luke Wadding Library) appears as Roy in James McLure's 'Lone Star' and Erin Kusik joins the crew as stage manager. The running time for the night is 90 minutes with a short interval. Half price tickets are available online to English and (or!) Theatre Studies students at SETU.

Tomorrow, Year 3 Theatre Studies students at South East Technological University present 'Underlying Conditions' St Patrick's Gateway Centre. The devised piece explores themes of identity, nationalism, and memory, asking questions such as: What does the tricolour mean to us? What is our story of Ireland?

The piece is a tapestry of personal anecdotes and experiences and invites the audience to witness the underlying conditions that make up the fabric of Irish society, creating an image of unity through story, song, poetry, and movement.

Last month, we took a trip to the Abbey Theatre for 'The Plough and the Stars', which was an excellent production. Thanks to Dr Úna Kealy for organising the trip, to the Faculty of Arts & Humanities South East Technological University for funding support, and to Duggan's Coaches for getting us there. Massive thanks to all involved in this production, which provided hours of conversations and debate across the three years of our BA (Hons.) Arts programmes.
