For 50 years, physicists have known that a specific number - one quarter - sits at the heart of every equation about black holes. Israeli physicist Prof. Jacob Bekenstein first identified the puzzle in the 1970s, and Stephen Hawking later formalized it into a precise equation. They knew the one-quarter was there. They just couldn't explain why.
Now, Dr. Ira Wolfson of Braude College of Engineering in Karmiel, Israel, thinks he has the answer - and it turns out to be surprisingly simple. The one-quarter isn't random. It's a direct result of the shape of the universe we live in: three dimensions of space, one of time. No complicated theories needed. "Sometimes the answers to the biggest questions in the universe are hidden in one small quarter," Wolfson said. The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Classical and Quantum Gravity.
