How do emotional difficulties among children and adolescents affect their parents, and what emotional and neurobiological mechanisms underlie this impact?

This is the question that earned Prof. Reuma Gadassi-Polack of the Faculty of Education and the Gonda Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center a prestigious €2 million ERC grant from the European Research Council.

ERC grants are among the most competitive and prestigious awards in academia and are awarded to groundbreaking research projects. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Prof. Gadassi-Polack, the Faculty of Education, and Bar-Ilan University. 👏

Congratulations to Prof. Hefziba Lifsh*tz on receiving the 2026 President's Award in recognition of her exceptional contribution to the State of Israel.

For many years, it was widely believed that the cognitive development of people with intellectual disabilities and Down syndrome reached its limit in childhood. Prof. Lifsh*tz's groundbreaking research transformed this understanding, demonstrating that cognitive abilities continue to develop and evolve well into adulthood.

Beyond her pioneering research, Prof. Lifsh*tz has translated knowledge into meaningful social impact. She founded Otzmot, an innovative three-stage program that enables the full academic inclusion of students with cognitive diversity. To date, six participants have successfully completed their academic studies through the program.

Prof. Lifsh*tz also heads the Segol and Etel laboratories, which advance research and promote greater accessibility to higher education for these populations. In addition, she serves as Head of the M.A. Program in Special Education (Cognitive Diversity).

In 1963, Bar-Ilan University awarded just one doctoral degree, in Hebrew Literature.

This year, at a moving ceremony held by the School of Graduate Studies, 263 new PhD recipients received their degrees across a wide range of fields and disciplines.

“Those receiving their degrees today completed their doctoral work during extremely challenging times,” said Prof. Doron Ginsberg, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. “You went through two years of a global pandemic, and now nearly three years of one of the most difficult wars we have ever known. And despite it all, you completed this mission with truly commendable success.”

Among the recipients were also 17 international students from nine different countries. The youngest, 24-year-old Yoshiao Wu from China, completed his PhD in the Department of Physics; the oldest, 79, completed his PhD in the Department of Political Studies.

Graduate representative Dr. Yoav Levinstein of the School of Social Work described the path to a PhD as a journey built from three elements: the body of research that was written, the weight carried by each researcher, and the personal journey each one undertook to reach this moment.

“Today, this expedition reaches the shore,” he said. “The research has been written, the burden has been lifted, and the journey has been successfully completed.”

As part of COMPUTEX 2026 in Taipei, a festive dinner was held in honor of the Israeli delegation, bringing together representatives from academia, industry, government, Israeli companies, the Jewish and Israeli community in Taiwan, and local partners.

The evening took place at the Jewish Center in Taipei, at the initiative and under the hospitality of Jeffrey D. Swartz, together with key figures who have been working for years to strengthen the ties between Israel and Taiwan, including TAITRA Global (Taiwan External Trade Development Council) Chairman James C. F. Huang, Israel–Taiwan Chamber of Commerce Chairman Ronen Heldman, businessman Edward Wen, and Israel’s Economic Attaché in Taiwan, Aviv Doron.

Beyond the festive gathering, the evening reflected the importance of personal and professional relationships in building international partnerships. In fields such as technology, research, innovation, and industry, the connections that begin around one table can later grow into practical collaborations between institutions, companies, and researchers.

For Bar-Ilan University, the visit to Taiwan is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen ties with academic and industry partners around the world, and to advance applied research in fields at the forefront of advanced technology.

At the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Engineering, 196 graduates and 58 master’s degree recipients received their degrees 👏

Among them were 12 graduates from the first cohort of the Industrial Engineering and Information Systems program, and nine graduates from the first cohort of the Hardware and Chip Design track within the Computer Engineering programת another reflection of the Faculty’s ongoing growth and its alignment with the technologies of tomorrow 🚀

“This is the essence of engineering studies,” said the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Orit Shefi. “Not only to learn the knowledge of yesterday, but to shape what will be relevant for tomorrow. To expand knowledge, and above all, to develop a way of thinking.”

“We learned to function under pressure,” said graduate representative Shalev Deutsch, a graduate of the Computer Engineering program, “to cope with uncertainty, to ask for help when needed, and to keep going even when there seems to be no logical solution on the horizon. Determination, perseverance, courage, and belief in yourself — these are the qualities that will enable us to make our dreams a reality.”

“Engineering is not only about technology, but also a way of thinking and a mission,” concluded Prof. Shefi. “You are the driving force moving us forward.”

Behind every degree in the exact sciences are years of consistent work: one more idea, one more experiment, one more proof, one more line of code. This is how knowledge is built, and this is how new ways of understanding the world begin to emerge.

The graduates of Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Exact Sciences are completing their studies in the Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science, joining a community of researchers, developers, and professionals who will continue to help shape the scientific and technological future.

One of the most moving moments of the evening was the graduates’ address, delivered by Ofek Bribi, an honors graduate of the Department of Computer Science and a survivor of the Nova festival. Ofek shared his experience of returning to his studies after the events of October 7, at a time when nothing felt normal anymore, and spoke about the strength he drew from his family, friends, and the Department of Computer Science, who helped him keep moving forward.

“For me, this is not only an academic or professional achievement, it is a victory,” he said.

Honored to announce that Dr. Yoli Shavit, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering Bar-Ilan University, has secured a major research win as part of an elite European consortium 🥇

Selected from a highly competitive field of international bids, the consortium has been awarded a prestigious €5.95 million Horizon Europe grant for a groundbreaking project, GENMAT (Generative Foundation Model for Multi-Scale Materials Discovery, Design and Deployment).

This ambitious initiative aims to deliver Europe’s first integrated Multi-Scale, Multi-Modal Materials-Science Foundation Model, designed to drastically accelerate lab-to-market timelines. Within this collaborative framework, Dr. Shavit’s group will focus on developing novel representation learning methods to connect data from multiple physical scales and modalities for downstream predictive and generative tasks.

The most prestigious award presented by Israel’s high-tech industry, the Global Industry Leader Award, was awarded to Prof. Alex Fish of the Faculty of Engineering 🥇

The award, presented annually at the ChipEx2026 Executive Forum, is given to exceptional individuals whose vision and leadership have reshaped the semiconductor industry and who serve as a source of inspiration for generations of engineers 👏

According to the judging committee, the award was presented to Prof. Fish “in recognition of his significant contribution to the semiconductor industry, reflected in his groundbreaking research in energy-efficient memory technologies, biomedical circuits, and Cryogenic CMOS technology; for founding and leading the EnICS Labs Institute at Bar-Ilan University as a national hub for hardware innovation; and for his excellence in educating generations of students in the field of VLSI at Bar-Ilan University.”

It was also noted during the award ceremony that Prof. Fish has helped turn advanced technology into real-world impact by co-founding RAAAM Memory Technologies and introducing breakthrough solutions for the world’s smallest high-density embedded memory.

Prof. Fish expressed his gratitude to Bar-Ilan University’s leadership, to Prof. Zeev Zalevsky, Vice President for Academia-Industry Relations, to Prof. Orit Shefi, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and to the Israel Innovation Authority for its long-standing support of the EnICS Labs Institute.
