Weizmann Institute of Science

Weizmann Institute of Science The official page of the Weizmann Institute of Science - מכון ויצמן למדע What awaits us in these places? No one has the answer to this question.

Guiding these scientists is the spirit of inquiry so characteristic of the human race. It is this spirit that propelled humans upward along the evolutionary ladder, helping them reach their utmost heights. It prompted humankind to pursue agriculture, learn to build lodgings, invent writing, harness electricity to power emerging technologies, observe distant galaxies, design drugs to combat variou

s diseases, develop new materials and decipher the genetic code embedded in all the plants and animals on Earth. The quest to maintain this increasing momentum compels Weizmann Institute scientists to seek out places that have not yet been reached by the human mind. But one thing is certain – the journey fired by curiosity will lead onward to a better future.

"What can you tell me about the audience at this lecture from this photo?" Moran Saar Behar asks ChatGPT on her phone, after showing it a photo of Weizmann Institute employees attending her lecture, "AI, Meaningful Conversations, & My Grandmother".
The exchange, which took place live on stage as part of the "Hiburim" program, demonstrates how people are using AI today - for personal conversations, gaining new perspectives, and even coping with loneliness.
Later in the fascinating lecture, through an amusing, moving, and surprising record of conversations between her 94-year-old grandmother and AI, Moran explores two questions: Can AI ever replace human warmth and intimacy, and where does the boundary lie between technology and human connection?

Why ask “how”?
As students head back to school, we’re looking not only at what children learn, but how they think.
A Weizmann Institute of Science study shows that children as young as 2nd grade can offer sophisticated scientific explanations for biological phenomena when asked “how” instead of “why.”
Led by Prof. Michal Haskel-Ittah of the Science Teaching Department, the researchers interviewed over 50 children from grades 2 through 6, asking them to explain a biological phenomenon and evaluate explanations for others. 68% gave mechanistic explanations, revealing the processes behind a phenomenon.
“They didn’t always have the biological facts right, but the structure of their thinking was there,” says Haskel-Ittah.
So how can we foster this kind of thinking? Sometimes, simply by asking better questions.
“We’re not aiming just for future researchers, we’re aiming to educate all citizens. Because in the end, we don’t only want thinking scientists, we want thinking adults” >> https://bit.ly/know-how-eng

We, the Weizmann Institute of Science community, deeply mourn the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath of the Institute’s Chemical and Structural Biology Department. Prof. Yonath pioneered the study of the ribosome, the cell’s protein factory, and was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her research in this field. Her decades-long scientific journey led to an understanding of how various antibiotics work, helping pave the way for the development of new antibiotics and the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Yonath, the first Israeli woman scientist to win a Nobel Prize, also received dozens of other awards and honors, including the Israel Prize in Chemistry and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Yonath exemplified how scientific vision, the courage to choose a major scientific question and unwavering dedication to its pursuit can lead to extraordinary achievements and expand the boundaries of knowledge for the future of humanity.
May her memory be a blessing.

XENONnT offers an unprecedented glimpse into one of nature’s rarest interactions. Today, the XENON Collaboration announced the first observation of low-energy solar neutrinos scattering off electrons in the XENONnT detector. The measurement extends the frontier of direct neutrino observations down to neutrino energies of about 17 keV, the lowest neutrino energy threshold ever achieved. The detected signal is dominated by pp neutrinos, produced in the proton–proton fusion reactions that power the Sun and account for the vast majority of its neutrino emission.
The international XENON Collaboration has been searching for dark matter since 2006. It includes scientists from 30 institutions across the world, including the team of Prof. Ranny Budnik of the Particle Physics and Astrophysics Department at the Weizmann Institute of Science. “We have entered an era in which we can see things that were previously beyond our reach”, says Prof. Budnik >> https://bit.ly/XENONnT-eng
