🎬 From Tel Aviv University to the big screen

Ahead of the Netflix launch of the TV series Fauda's 5th season on Sept. 8th, co-creator and Tel Aviv University alumnus Avi Issacharoff revealed that fans may be heading to the cinema soon.

Speaking to a packed audience at an event in London organized for the Tel Aviv University Trust UK - TAU Trust in collaboration with The Jewish News and Immanuel College, Issacharoff revealed that a Fauda movie is in the works, while keeping the details, and any spoilers, firmly under wraps.

A journalist, author, and graduate of Tel Aviv University, Issacharoff has turned his deep knowledge of the region and years of reporting into one of Israel’s most successful television exports, co-creating Fauda with Lior Raz.

📚 It's September 1st — Back to School Day!
But what if learning felt less like a lesson and more like solving a mystery?

In Israel, the Hebrew Language Youth Olympiad is inspiring thousands of students to rediscover the richness of Hebrew and find their love for learning the language.

Developed by TAU’s Department of Hebrew Language and Semitic Linguistics, the competition encourages creative thinking by asking students to solve language-based codes, explore word origins, and uncover the logic behind grammar and idioms. Since its launch in 2022, participation has grown nearly fivefold, from about 1,800 to more than 9,000 students.

The program now includes a special track for non-native speakers, attracting Druze and Arab students in Israel and hundreds of international participants. By turning language into a challenge and a game, The Olympiad is helping a new generation appreciate the depth and creativity of Hebrew.

People with paralysis walking again?

A technology developed at Tel Aviv University is moving closer to what could become the world’s first implantation of an engineered spinal cord.

Biotech company Matricelf has signed an agreement with Loewenstein Rehabilitation Medical Center to begin identifying and evaluating potential patients and collecting blood samples to produce personalized neural implants.

The technology, developed in Prof. Tal Dvir’s lab at TAU, uses a patient’s own cells and tissues to create a biological neural implant designed to replace damaged spinal cord tissue.

The goal: to test whether it can help people living with paralysis following spinal cord injury stand, walk, and regain greater independence.

If all scientific and regulatory milestones are completed as planned, Matricelf estimates that treatment of the first selected patient could begin in the first half of 2027.

Congratulations to the graduates of the Azrieli School of Architecture!

Recently we celebrated the opening of the graduate exhibition, called "Architecture in Transition,” showcasing their remarkable final projects.
It was deeply moving to see our graduates, together with their families, mark the end of this meaningful chapter at such a festive and special event and celebrate the beginning of a new journey.

The exhibition offered an opportunity to discover the ideas, questions, and perspectives they developed throughout their years of study, and to see how these have taken shape in their final projects.

Lifetime Achievement Award for Prof. Dina Porat for her Contribution to the Study of Antisemitism

Congratulations to Prof. Dina Porat, Professor Emerita in the Department of Jewish History, on receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from CASA, an association that brings together academic research centers in Israel and around the world dedicated to the study of contemporary antisemitism.

The award recognizes Prof. Porat’s “academic and public contribution to the study, documentation and definition of antisemitism as it manifests today.” It was presented during a recent conference hosted by the Comper Center in Haifa.

How do you make a 2,500-year-old tragedy feel new? Sometimes, not by making it bigger, but by stripping it down.

In TAU Theatre’s new production of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, adapted and directed by Ariel N. Wolf, the entire tragedy is placed in the hands of just three performers: Rea Deshe, Hagar Zander and Amit Lasri.

Moving rapidly between characters, narrators and their own presence onstage, the actors operate as what Deshe calls a “three-headed monster”: three individuals sharing text, movement and responsibility for an entire dramatic world.

Oedipus the King is an inaugural production of The Lab, a new TAU Theatre framework that connects academic research, professional theatre-making, and education. Dedicated to the memory of Prof. Nurit Yaari, it brings together graduates, students, faculty, and theatre professionals to test how classical works can continue to speak to the present.

Tel Aviv University’s Conference on Innovation and Creativity in Teaching offered a compelling answer to a question many young people are beginning to ask:

- If AI can teach me almost anything, why should I go to university?

The conference suggested that the future value of higher education may lie less in delivering information and more in creating experiences that are difficult to reproduce alone.

As access to explanations and established knowledge becomes easier, educators can devote more attention to mentorship, experimentation, intellectual friction, and meaningful human interaction. The question is no longer only what students should know, but what they should be able to do, and who they should become through the process.

Perhaps this is the opportunity AI creates for universities.

TAU’s conference showed that innovation is not simply about adding more technology. It is about redesigning learning around the things technology cannot easily replace: community, curiosity, responsibility, dialogue, and encounters with people and ideas we did not yet know to seek.
