Events & Activities at C.U. SHAH ARTS COLLGE
Intellectual and Fine Arts :
Committed to provide quality education, the college throbs with following intellectual and fine arts activity:
Students’ participation in inter-class within college, and intercollegiate elocution competitions is encouraged and ensured. The Department of Hindi successfully arranges an annual competition in Hind at inter-collegiate level.
Eminent speakers are invited to deliver expert lectures on syllabus and other relevant issues.
The college runs a wall magazine to showcase students’ creative expressions through poetry, painting, collage, cartooning, photography, rangoli and mehendi. It is titled `Spandan’ and the activities culminate in a three-day annual exhibition visited by eminent artists, art lovers and students from other colleges.
Cultural :
Education is incomplete without exposure to the Arts, the pinnacle of civilized society. The college endeavors to cultivate the sensitivity of students towards the same. It encourages them to realize their potential through various cultural activities. Besides providing a significant means of expression, this serves to instil self confidence.
Theatre:
There is a vibrant theatre activity with an annual drama workshop. The participants go on to win several prizes in University Youth Festival stage events like mime, skit, monoacting and mimicry. Some of the more talented students participate in a prestigious state level inter-college one-act play contest. The contest is organized annually by a leading vernacular daily, ‘Gujarat Samachar’, jointly with Indian National Theatre (INT), Mumbai. Several prizes in this contest is a matter of pride for the college.
Youth Festival :
The college actively participates in University Youth Festival. Guidance is given to the students to ensure best performance.
Dance and Music :
Annual dance and music competitions are held in the college Garba dance competition is a regular feature. Students actively participate in various inter-college competitions also.
Social and Welfare:
There is an endeavour to create a sense of accountability among students towards community, society, country and themselves. So the college runs various social and welfare activities. They help in preparing young and dynamic leaders of tomorrow.
Earn and Learn :
This successful job placement endeavour is a source of great pride and satisfaction. Since its inception in 1999, the scheme has helped several students in acquiring jobs even as they continue their studies. Earn and Learn Scheme is a source of financial support for some, while in others it instils a sense of self-reliance.
N.S.S. and N.C.C.
They are two important pillars of social activities undertaken by the college. They train students to inculcate the philosophy of `Not me, but you’, which is also the motto of NSS. The NSS unit of the college holds, every year, ten-day social service camps at nearby villages with nearly 50 girls and boys. A blood donation camp is also a regular activity. In addition, this unit also takes up relief activity in times of disaster. Similarly, the NCC unit instils nationalistic feelings among students.
The unit occassionally organizes seminars,orientation and training programmes for the Gujarat University NSS programme officers.
The unit has adopted and worked for the socio-economic, education and envionrment development of Bakrol-Gam in Daskroi district of Gujarat.
The unit has established a public library in Ganf Gam of Dhandhuka district.
During floods in year 2005, Aantroli and Keshavpura Gam in Mator district were helped with basic facilities like household, clothing, food and grain, school bags etc. Same was undertaken during floods in Surat.
Deepak Saudagar became the best Gujarat University NSS cadet for year 2006.
Shilpa Patel (girl’s wing) participated in the 26th January 2003 Republic Day Parade at Delhi.
Neha R Chaudhari (girl’s wing) stood first On a National level Pulling and Ship modeling Competition at Vishakapattnam. She was selected for the RDC Camp in Delhi and stood third in the ship modeling competition.
Padnabh H Raval (boys’ wing) participated in the 26th January 2003 RDC Parade at Delhi.
Kalrav :
Committed to the philosophy of social upliftment through education, this is a scheme in which a group of students and teachers regularly visit the underprivileged areas of the city. They meet the children there and involve them in educational activities like singing, story telling, games and basic alphabet learning.
CWDC : College Women Development Committee
Ours’ being an Arts college, girl students are in majority. CWDC, therefore, is not merely a mandatory unit but is a result of genuine concern for the status of girl students. The committee organizes several activities to achieve the following aims :

Create Awareness about Health and Hygiene
Find Solutions to Their Personal Problems
Scholarships & Financial Aid
Government sponsored scholarships are made available to the students. Besides this, the college provides financial aid as an incentive to the needy students with an aim to promote academic excellence.
Publications :
Time and again the college undertakes publication activity so that the students can benefit from the published material. The college has the following publications :
"Spandan"
It is a regularly published college magazine. It carries the annual reports of the activities and achievements of students and staff. Their creative writings in form of poetry, articles, stories etc. also find place in it.
Let’s speak English
It is a book about English language learning. The book was a result of interaction with students during the U.G.C. sponsored remedial classes. It was written by the members of Department of English under the guidance of Prof. Jayant Joshi (Retd., C.U.Shah Science College, Ashram Road, Ahmedabad).
"Vyatha"
`Vyatha’ is the title of a collection of Gujarati poems written by a college student, Mr. Chetan Valand.
Ganesh Strotra
A collection of stotras on Lord Ganesha.
Art Point :
Short time crash courses are organized by the college in various art activities like glass-painting, flower-making, frame-making, paper-work, rubber-painting, tie-and dye, soft toys and tin-embossing. They enable the students to earn money and to sustain their interest in creative arts.
Sports :
As they say, a sound mind resides in a sound body. Sports, therefore, are an integral part of C. U. Shah Arts College. Although there is only a small playground with a sports room, the students have participated and won in many inter-college and inter-university sports events. Kabbaddi, Khokho (for girls) and Boxing are some of the games in which the college teams have become champions. The college organizes an Annual Sports Day in which about 400 students remain present on the ground. For two consecutive years the college also hosted sports events on city zone level. The Physical Director offers systematic training to the students and encourages them to participate. He is also actively involved with special sports activity for special children.
Students successfully participate in sports events like Judo, Weight Lifting, Hand Ball, Kabbaddi, Boxing Khokho at national, state Inter university, university and Inter-college level.
The college Khokho (girls) team became University Champion in 2003.
Vipul Brahmbhatt was selected for the National Level Championship in Boxing in year 1999.
Hiren Arya was selected for national level championship in Handball in year 1995.
Kinjal ,Rajal ,Vaishali and Naseen were selected for the Inter University Khokho Team in year 2000.
The khokho team (girls) reached the semi-final at Gujarat University Level in year 2007.
Health Care :
With the help of Gujarat University the college arranges health care programmes for students. The First Year students have to undergo a compulsory medical check-up by doctors representing the University. Students suffering from critical diseases are helped by the college for the follow-up treatment. In addition to this, all students are given reading material and are made to attend expert lectures. This raises consciousness about diseases and epidemics and gives information regarding their prevention.
