The inaugural session of the Educational Workshop on “Chemistry in Life” Organised by the Department of Industrial Chemistry, Mizoram University was held on 20th April 2026 at the Cluster Building Auditorium, Mizoram University. The programme brought together faculty members, researchers, and students, providing an excellent academic platform to discuss the relevance of chemistry in contemporary life.
The session began with a welcome address by Prof. Ved Prakash Singh, Head, Department of Industrial Chemistry, Mizoram University. He outlined the objectives of the workshop and highlighted the integrative role of chemistry in both scientific and societal domains.
The Guest of Honour, Prof. A.K. Sahoo from the University of Hyderabad, and Prof. Ghanashyam Bez from North Eastern Hill University, delivered insightful addresses. They emphasized the importance of chemistry in everyday life and stressed the need for interdisciplinary approaches in advancing chemical research.
The Chief Guest, Shri G. Laxman Ji Garu, highlighted the vision of Viksit Bharat and underscored the critical role of educational development in nation-building.
Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Mizoram University, delivered the keynote address. He emphasized the strategic importance of chemistry in societal advancement and noted that individual development forms the foundation for national progress.
The inaugural session concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Lalhmunsiama, Assistant Professor, Department of Industrial Chemistry, Mizoram University. He expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, organizers, and participants. The session ended with the singing of the National Anthem.
TECHNICAL SESSION
A technical session followed the inaugural programme, during which the invited dignitaries delivered expert lectures on specialized topics.
Prof. A.K. Sahoo from the University of Hyderabad delivered a lecture on “Impact of Stereochemistry in Human Well-being”. His presentation provided a comprehensive overview of stereochemistry, covering its introduction, historical development, and societal impact, with special emphasis on its role in drug design and therapeutic efficacy.
Prof. Diwakar Tiwari from Mizoram University spoke on “Basics of Analytical Chemistry”. He outlined the fundamental principles of analytical chemistry, focusing particularly on titration methods and their relevance in environmental monitoring, clinical diagnostics, and industrial applications. He underscored the critical role of analytical techniques in ensuring data reliability and scientific rigor.
Prof. Ved Prakash Singh from Mizoram University conducted an engaging interactive session titled “Fun in Science”. Through hands-on experimental demonstrations, he illustrated fundamental chemical concepts. The session emphasized experiential learning using simple yet effective experiments, enabling participants to visualize theoretical principles in practice and fostering deeper conceptual understanding.
Prof. Ghanashyam Bez from North Eastern Hill University delivered a talk on “Which Chemistry is an Exciting Career Option?”. He discussed contemporary and impactful areas in chemical sciences, including energy (conventional and alternative sources), their limitations, and emerging solutions such as green hydrogen and clean water technologies. The lecture provided an insightful overview of diverse, future-oriented career pathways in the chemical sciences.
The workshop concluded on a highly successful note, marked by active participation and insightful discussions. The sessions effectively highlighted both the theoretical and applied aspects of chemistry, inspiring continued academic engagement and interest among the participants.
