The Students Counselling Centre, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organised a session on Counselling Awareness at the STS School in which students of classes IX, X, XII and XII were given professional guidance and help to choose careers and courses by the Chief-Speaker, Professor Akbar Husain, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences.


During the interaction with students, Prof Husain stressed on the importance of self-realisation and self-repair for building successful careers. Quoting religious scriptures and philosophers, Prof Husain emphasised that students should pursue their dreams and aim to excel in the subject of their choice.


"Each subject has its importance and relevance," said Prof Husain while answering queries of students. He urged the students to visit the Counselling Centre and to meet Dr M Akram to further clear their doubts and confusions on which careers to opt for.

Mr Faisal Nafis, Principal, STS School chaired the session, while Dr M Alamgir conducted the programme. STS School teachers were also present on the occasion.

Orientation programme for MSW students

ALIGARH September 8: Exhorting the students of Master of Social Work (MSW), the Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said, "Academic pursuits and research were intertwined and a regular process to bring thoughts into practices and they must strive to attain excellence in the service of humanity using the various facilities available in the University". He was addressing the inaugural session of the week-long 23rd Orientation Programme held for the students of MSW.

He said that MSW students have a wider arena of opportunities to pursue a better career including Swachhta Abhiyan, community health, elementary education, environmental preservation, management of natural disaster and social outreach programmes undertaken by corporate world.

Prof Mansoor appreciated the role of MSW students and volunteers who are doing their best for the community good in the five villages adopted by the University.

Prof Akbar Husain, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, said that the Social Work Department has many achievements to its credit and it has meaningfully helped in upgrading the University's ranking on national and international levels. He urged the faculty members of the department to train students in a way they are able to face challenges in modern society.

The guest of honour, Prof Mohammad Gulrez, Director, Centre of Continuing and Adult Education and Extension appreciated the work done by the students and faculty members of Department of Social Work for social uplift. He said it is their duty to bring the fruits of education to socially marginalized people and they can serve the humanity in a wider area of development.

Earlier, Dr Naseem Ahmad Khan, Chairperson of the department welcomed the guests and presented a report on the achievements of teachers and students.

On this occasion, two books - "BRICS Summit and India" and "Migration, Maternal Health and HIV" authored by Dr Naseem Ahmad Khan and Dr Qurratul Ain Ali, respectively, were released.

Dr Qurratul Ain Ali conducted the programme while Dr Mohammad Uzair proposed the vote of thanks.

AMU students qualify government services examinations



Aligarh, September 8: At least four students of the Residential Coaching Academy, Aligarh Muslim University have qualified the prestigious government services examinations.



They are Athar Noor, who qualified the UPSC to work as the Labour Enforcement Officer; M Nawaj Shah Shah, will now work as the Assistant Vigilance Officer (Intelligence Bureau) after qualifying the Ministry of Home Services Exam; Sahib Alam has been selected to work in the Bihar Education Service through the Bihar Public Service Commission and M Musheer Alam also cracked the Bihar Public Service Commission for the post of Sub-Registrar.

Cultural festival, Plexus, concludes

ALIGARH September 10: The annual festival of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, "Plexus 2018" concluded here with a scintillating musical concert performed by noted Bollywood playback singer and stage artist, Raj Barman. Expressing gratitude to the organizers, Raj Barman said it was a memorable occasion for him to visit the historical AMU and experience the hospitality of its students. The programme, held at the Kennedy Auditorium, showcased outstanding vocal and musical performance and the audience enjoyed the musical extravaganza to the core of their heart.

During the five-day cultural event, which was inaugurated by Professor SC Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Principal, JN Medical College, a number of literary, cultural, sports and entertainment events including Antakshri, drama, music concert, food festival 'Medifete', solo singing, debate, pillar decoration, face painting, eye makeup, volleyball, cricket and football matches were organized and a large number of students from different faculties participated in these events.

A beauty pageant was also held on this occasion to select Mister and Miss Plexus which after several screening rounds judging the participants for their smartness and confidence.

Japanese Hindi Professor visits AMU



Aligarh, September 10: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) today hosted a special guest. Professor Hideaki Ishida, who teaches Hindi as a part of the International Cultures programme at the Daito Bunka University located close to Tokyo had AMU as his 'itnerary must' during his India trip to take stock of the use of Hindi and Urdu languages in the southern India.



"People in Japan are curious and more interested in India than ever before and the Tokyo University has been teaching Hindustani since 1908," said Prof Ishida.



The Daito Bunka University, has been running Hindi and Urdu programmes for over 35 years, informed Prof Ishida at two different functions organised by the Hindi and Urdu departments of AMU. He was the Chief Guest at the Sahitya Samiti programme of the Department of Hindi and the Interaction Programme organised by the Research Association and Anjuman Urdu-e-Moalla, Department of Urdu with noted writer and academic, Prof Suresh Rituparna.



Prof Ishida, who visits India every year, said that he has a special interest in Dalit Hindi literature which he developed during his student days in India. "I did my Masters in Hindi from the Delhi University and it was this time that I started exploring how the Dalit community has used literature to express themselves," he further said pointing out that he became particularly interested in the Marathi Dalit literature model and even started learning the Marathi language.



While releasing the special issue of the Department of Hindi's journal, 'Abhinav Bharti' on Amritlal Nagar, Prof Ishida said that for him Nagar is a very important exponent of fiction, who revealed the power of Manak (standard) Hindi and Ghair-Manak (ordinary) Hindi.



Sharing his experience of teaching Hindi at a Japanese University, Prof Suresh Rituparna said that in the beginning of the Hindi course in Japan, he used to teach students, the basic things like how they would introduce themselves and then they would move onto exercises and also teach them how to travel, how to shop, how to talk to strangers and how to use Hindi language in real-life situations.



He said that the Japanese students ended up liking everything about India. "After learning Hindi, they start enjoying the Indian movies, music and travel to places like Jaipur, Agra and Benares," said Prof Rituparna adding that he used to bring a Japanese delegation of students to India every year.



Prof Shambhunath and Prof Ved Prakash of the Department of Hindi said that by laying importance of the usage and teaching of foreign languages, developed countries like Japan have shown the world that new horizons can be achieved.



Professor Abdul Aleem Chairman of the department said that Hindi department accords welcome and a range lectures of eminent scholars and this function bears testimony to the efforts of the department to work for the spread of knowledge.



Prof Mohammad Tariq, Chairperson, Department of Urdu emphasised that Hindi and Urdu are closely linked to and depend on each other for their survival and it is wrong to associate the languages with particular communities. "Every year, Hindu students get enrolled in the Urdu graduation, post-graduation and Phd programmes in AMU and similarly we have Muslim teachers and students of Hindi language," he said.



Prof Abdul Alim, Chairperson, Department of Hindi; Prof Shafey Kidwai, Chairperson, Department of Mass Communication; Prof Kamalanand Jha; Prof M Q H Faridi, In-charge, Research Association, Department of Urdu and Prof Mehtab Haider Naqvi, Incharge, Anjuman-Urdu-e-Moalla were present on the occasion.

Swachta Pakhwada event held at Abdullah School: AMU

Aligarh, September 10: The Abdullah School, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organised "Green Campus Day and Swachta Art Competition" as a part of event "Swachta Pakhwada", which is a significant initiative under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Ms.. Umra Zaheer Superintendent of Abdullah School said that AMU is focused on Swachhata-related activities and making the drive "everyone's business". She also emphasized on the importance of planting trees in schools and surroundings.

To mark the event a drawing competition and plantation drive was also held.

The Superintendent, Teaching, Non-teaching staff and students participated in the drive.

The Aligarh Muslim University has recently received a certificate of the 11th rank among the Indian Universities from the National Institutional Ranking Framework India Rankings (NIRF), associated with the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.



With the certificate, the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has also sent a letter of greeting to the Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran). The letter stated: “As one of the top-ranked institutions, we offer our hearty congratulations and also thank you for the participation in this effort.”
