Ros na kahu sang karo aapan aap bichaar (ang 259)

Ros - anger
Kahu sang - with anyone
Aapan - yourself
Bichaar - contemplate

Don't fight or get angry at others; contemplate within yourself to see where you went wrong.

--------

Before reaching the gas station, I had already prepared a thousand in hundred bills to give for the gas.
I handed over the money to the attendant and he walked away to fill it up.
After a minute he came back and said there were only nine notes. One was missing.

I said "No I gave ten, you should have counted before leaving the spot.
He said "I swear they will only nine I wouldn't cheat you."

I said "well neither would I cheat you what do you think I am a liar?"

He said "I didn't say that, you are calling yourself a liar."

The debate went on and on it became a little heated. Just then, I glanced on the note that had fallen between the door and my seat.

"Oops!" I thought in my mind "it must have dropped there while handing him the money. Now what do I do? Should I just admit that I was wrong?"

The mind said "well this guy is so rude, he could have talked to you nicely. If you surrender right now it will make you look like a fool so don't give up.
And isn't it his fault that he didn't count the money before leaving the spot?"

I took out another 100 note from my pocket and handed over to him acting as if I am the bigger person and am giving it to him in disgust.
I drove away looking greater but internally I knew I had become very small in my own eyes.

Do you know that moment when you know that you could be wrong but you can't give up?
I wish I could have just picked up that note and said "I'm so sorry it just fell down you were right I was wrong."

But your ego would rather blame the whole world but yourself?
There are so many such moments in life when internally you feel, you hear a voice that says "no you are wrong."
Even when you have someone point out to you about your belief that doesn't make sense to you... Yet you hang in there with your mistakes, with your prejudices, stupidness just to be able to win a war that doesn't make sense.

We grew up so many years and yet we are internally just like a child who does not know how to lose.

Shabad ratey meethey ras eekh (ang 152)

Shabad - wisdom from the words
Ratey - imbued
Meethey - sweet
Ras - juice
Eekh - sugarcane

Those who have taken the essence of the Shabbad, become sweet like the juice of sugarcane.

--------

The art of eating food is something we picked as we were growing up.
We taste something and then take it in, knowing that the food that will benefit our body.

That little pause in the mouth is important.
The chewing of the food, relishing the taste gives a little time to digest the food in the mouth so that it's not too heavy on the stomach.

Words need a little time to be in your mouth before leaving.
You know that moment before you say everything that comes to mind?
Just like the food benefits or harms your body, words benefit or harm the listeners and hence the relations.
Easier to control the food that goes inside the stomach, tougher to filter the words that come out.

Both require an awakening. If we want to be healthier, we need to check on our intake. If we want to have better relations and not repent over the words we have used, we need to take a moment before we say things.

Literally take a moment and slowly you'll notice that the filter works and you don't end up blurring out everything.

Prabh kae simran nehchal aasan (ang 263)

Prabh - lord
Simran - reminiscing
Nechal - stable, balanced
Aasan - inner posture

Through reminiscing in the Lord, one finds a stability, a balance as an inner posture.

------

As we age our sense of balance changes.
Observing older people changing from a sitting position to a standing position, you will notice that they move tentatively, especially those with a sedentary lifestyle.
Balance is very important to self confidence and self reliance, regardless of age.

Thus, practicing yoga has a wealth of benefits that improve your balance and self-confidence.

And while it is easy to understand the physical balance and try to do the exercises that can maintain our balance, we have to understand the more difficult balance of our attitude, our judgment, our mind that always lives in extremes.

A balance is so important and yet something most people can't find.
A balance between work and rest, faith and logic, holding on and letting go.
Just as we have Yoga or other practices that can help the body come to a balance, the mind has its own yoga of contemplation on Words of the wise and Facts of Life to be able to attain a balance.
Be a balanced being!

Kali andar Nanka jinnan da autaar (ang 556)

Kali - Kalyug
Andar - in
Jinnan - demons
Autaar - birth

O Nanak, in the time Kalyug, demons are being born.

-----

Normally the translation of the above verse is : Demons are born in the Kali Yuga or dark times. I used to wonder that since they say this is the time of Kalyug, are we all demons?

Firstly, Gurbani does not confine to the division of Yugas as a chronological age but more to do with the state of mind.

So then let's make it simple and understand this from a more psychological point of view.

Kali is also used for Kaleh or ਕਲੇਸ਼.
It means conflict or fight.
It can be a rift in relations or the inner battle between good and evil.

When darkness hovers in our lives, that period is called Kali+yug or dark period.
Now we can expand on to understand that the personalities that are born during this time are all demons.
Well, when we are in extreme anger and can't come out of our darkness, then many people would end up saying "it was as if you had been possessed by a demon".

That is what I feel, Gurbani is trying to warn us and say "All the thoughts and personalities born in us during the time of Kaleh are nothing less than demons and we should be aware of such times."
