died June 27, 1839, Lahore [now in Pakistan]), founder and Maharaja (1801–39) of the Sikh kingdom of the Punjab.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh was the first Indian in a millennium to turn the tide of invasion back into the homelands of the traditional conquerors of India, the Pashtuns (Afghans), and he thus became known as the Lion of the Punjab. At their height, his domains extended from the Khyber Pass in the northwest to the Sutlej River in the east and from the Kashmir region at the northern limit of the Indian subcontinent southward to the Thar (Great Indian) Desert.
In 1839, The sun set on the Sikh rule, the samadhi of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh stands mute testimony to all the treachery that led to downfall.The Samadhi of Ranjit Singh is the mausoleum of the Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Located in Lahore, Pakistan, near the Lahore Fort and Badshahi Mosque, the mausoleum was begun by his son Kharak Singh on the spot where he was cremated, and was completed by Dalip Singh in 1848. The tomb is a splendid example of Sikh architecture, with gilded fluted domes and cupolas and an ornate balustrade round the top. Ranjit Singh's ashes are contained in a marble urn in the shape of a lotus, sheltered under a marble pavilion inlaid with pietra dura, in the centre of the tomb. Other tiny urns contain the ashes of his four wives and seven concubines who threw themselves on his funeral pyre. These urns were removed from the marble pavilion and were replaced by a simple slab around 1999. This desecration of the mausoleum was part of the preparations for the Khalsa Tricentenary and the visit of Sikh dignitaries from India.The Samadhi was damaged by the earthquake in October 2005.

Two small monuments to the west of the main mausoleum commemorate Ranjit Singh's son Kharak Singh and grandson Nau Nihal Singh, and their wives....

ਹੱਛਾ ਰੱਜ ਕੇ ਰਾਜ ਕਮਾਇ ਗਿਆ ।

ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ 1799 ਈ: ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਹੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਕਬਜ਼ਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਰਾਜ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਰਾਜ ਨੂੰ 'ਸਰਕਾਰ-ਏ-ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ' ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ। ਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਮੋਹਰ ਉਪਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਸਹਾਇ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਕਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਾਇ ਜਾਂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਹਾਇ ਉਕਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਨ ਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਕਰਦੇ। ਜਿੱਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸ਼ੁਕਰਾਨੇ ਲਈ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਗੁਰੁੂ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਨਤਮਸਤਕ ਹੁੰਦੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਸਿਰਫ 8 ਪ੍ਰਤੀਸ਼ਤ ਸੀ। ਬਾਕੀ 92 ਪ੍ਰਤੀਸ਼ਤ ਜਨਤਾ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਜਾਂ ਇਸਲਾਮ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਧਾਰਨੀ ਸੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰੇਕ ਧਰਮ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਜ਼ਾਦਾਨਾ ਮਾਹੌਲ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਸੀ। ਕੱਟੜਵਾਦ, ਤੰਗਦਿਲੀ ਤੋਂ ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਕੋਹਾਂ ਦੂਰ ਸਨ। ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਉਦਾਰ ਨੀਤੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਜਗੀਰਾਂ ਲਗਵਾਈਆਂ, ਬਲਕਿ ਮੰਦਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਸਜਿਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਵੀ ਭਾਰੀ ਖਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ।

ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਹਰ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚਾ ਚੁੱਕਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਸਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ।
ਅਜ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ੨੮ ਜੂਨ ੧੮੩੯ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੇਰੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਸਸਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਕਿਲੇ ਚ .......
