UVCE Bangalore - University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, was established in 1917 by Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya, who was the then Diwan of Mysore. He felt the need to have an engineering college in the state as the existing ones in other parts of the country were unable to accommodate enough students from Mysore State. He started the college as a School of Engineering with 20 students in Civil and Mechanical engineering branches in the PWD building.
In 1921, UVCE became the first college in India to have a department of electrical engineering. The college also introduced courses in Architecture, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and Information Science over the years.

In 1965, the name of the college was changed to University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, after its founder. The college was affiliated to Bangalore University since 1964. In 2021, UVCE became an autonomous institution with its own Act.

UVCE has grown steadily and is imparting quality technical education, leading to B.Tech., B. Arch., M.Tech., M. Arch. and PhD degrees in various disciplines of Engineering and Architecture. The college is approved by the AICTE and the Government of Karnataka. The departments are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi.

UVCE has a legacy of producing some of the best engineers in the country, who have contributed to various fields of science, technology, industry and society. Some of the notable alumni of UVCE are Dr. Venugopal K R (Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University), Dr. Roddam Narasimha (eminent aerospace scientist), Dr. V K Aatre (former DRDO chief), Dr. K Sivan (ISRO chairman), Dr. H R Nagendra (yoga guru), Dr. K N Shankara (former director of ISRO Satellite Centre), Dr. S Gopalakrishnan (co-founder of Infosys), Dr. B N Suresh (former director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre), Dr. Praveen Vishakantaiah (former president of Intel India) and many more.

UVCE has a vibrant campus life, with various technical and non-technical activities organized by the students throughout the year. The college has several special interest groups, clubs and associations that foster the technical and creative skills of the students on various platforms. Some of the major events hosted by UVCE are Milagro (the annual cultural fest), Impetus (the annual technical fest), VisionUVCE (the alumni initiative), IEEE UVCE (the student branch of IEEE) and many more.

UVCE has a dedicated training and placement office.

UVCE has consistently maintained an excellent placement record, with many reputed companies visiting the campus every year. The college has also received funding from the World Bank under the TEQIP project for improving the quality of technical education through various programmes and infrastructural developments.

According to the latest statistics, around 115 companies have visited UVCE so far for the 2023 Batch Students and more than 353 offers have been made to students across various streams. Some of the major recruiters of UVCE are Quantiphi Analytics, Clumio, Refinitiv (Thomson Reuters), Rakuten India - BE 2020, Philips Innovation, Axis Cades, Analytics quotient, HashedIn Technologies, BlogVault etc. The highest package offered was 30 LPA to 3 students in 2022 and 50.25 LPA to one student in 2021.

B Muthuraman: A Visionary Leader for UVCE

B Muthuraman is a distinguished industrialist and a former chairman of Tata International and Tata Steel. He has been appointed as the first chairman of the board of governors of the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) in Bengaluru, one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering colleges in India.

On August 4, 2022, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot nominated B Muthuraman as the chairman of the first board of governors of UVCE for a period of four years. Muthuraman is an alumnus of IIT Madras and XLRI Jamshedpur. He joined Tata Steel in 1966 and held various positions, including managing director (2001) and non-executive vice-chairman (2009). He was instrumental in the acquisition of Corus Group by Tata Steel in 2007, which made it the fifth largest steel producer in the world. He was also the chairperson of Tata International, a global trading and distribution company. He retired from Tata Group in 2013. He has received several awards and recognitions, including Padma Bhushan in 2012.

As the first chairman of UVCE board, Muthuraman has a great responsibility and opportunity to shape the future of UVCE and its students. He can inspire and motivate them to follow the footsteps of Sir M Visvesvaraya and become leaders in their respective fields. He can also uphold and enhance the legacy and reputation of UVCE as a premier engineering institution in India and abroad.

Engineer’s Day in India is celebrated annually on September 15th to honor the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a distinguished engineer and statesman. Born in 1861, Sir M Visvesvaraya’s contributions to engineering and public works have left an indelible mark on India’s infrastructure and development.

In recognition of his monumental contributions, the Government of India declared his birthday as Engineer’s Day. Sir M Visvesvaraya’s innovative engineering solutions, such as the flood protection system for Hyderabad and the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, have been pivotal in modernizing India’s water management and urban planning.

Additionally, Sir M Visvesvaraya played a crucial role in the establishment of the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) in Bangalore. Founded in 1917, UVCE has since become a premier institution for engineering education in India, continuing his legacy of excellence and innovation.
