On May 23, 1905, Einstein published the equation E=mc², demonstrating the equivalence of mass and energy. This equation has profound implications for our understanding of the universe. Today in physics history also includes other significant events and discoveries, such as the invention of the first transistor in 1947 by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley, which earned them the Nobel Prize in 1956.

Dept. Of Physics, MRSPTU Bathinda pays tribute to Dr. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar (19th July 1938 to 20th May 2025)..

He died in Pune at the age of 87.

Jayant Narlikar is renowned as an astrophysicist, but there are many unique memories and lesser-known facts about him that few people are aware of.

*Early Life and Education*
Jayant Vishnu Narlikar was born on July 19, 1938, in Kolhapur. He spent his childhood and early education in this city, making him a true son of Kolhapur. His father, Prof. Vishnu Vaman Narlikar, was a mathematics professor at Rajaram College. Their home was filled with an atmosphere of scholarship and discipline. Jayant Narlikar completed his intermediate education at Rajaram College itself. He lived in Kolhapur until the age of 18–19, which gave him a special emotional connection to the city. It is a matter of pride for Kolhapur that such a great personality hails from here. Although Jayant Narlikar gained international recognition, he always lived a simple life and retained a strong mental bond with Kolhapur.

*Influence of His Mother and a Love for Literature*
While his father was a mathematician, his mother, Sunitibai Narlikar, was well-versed in Sanskrit and Marathi. Their home was filled with literature, poetry, and Sanskrit verses from an early age. As a result, Jayant Narlikar developed a deep interest in literature alongside his scientific pursuits.

*Collaboration with Stephen Hawking*
Many people don’t know that Jayant Narlikar and Stephen Hawking were contemporaries at Cambridge University. They collaborated on scientific research and even co-authored some academic papers. This led to a friendship between the two great minds.

*Close to a Nobel Prize*
Narlikar’s research based on the “Steady State Theory” gained significant recognition. Although the “Big Bang Theory” later became more widely accepted, at one point Narlikar’s name was seriously considered for the Nobel Prize—something very few people know.

*Teaching Students Personally*
As the founding director of IUCAA (Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics), Narlikar didn’t limit himself to administrative duties. He continued teaching students regularly. To generate interest in astronomy, he also wrote popular science literature in Marathi, making the subject accessible to all.

*Offered a Role in a Movie*
Because of his distinguished personality, he was once offered a teacher’s role in a Marathi film. However, he humbly declined the offer, believing that promoting science was his true art form.

*Cycling to the Laboratory*
While studying at Cambridge, he often cycled to the laboratory. His colleagues were amazed that such a brilliant mind chose to live with such simplicity.

*Constant Support from His Wife*
His wife, Mangala Narlikar, was also a mathematician. She created a peaceful and inspiring home environment that supported his research. Jayant Narlikar often credits her for playing a key role in many of the important decisions of his life.

Jayant Narlikar is a globally respected name. His contributions to science, his courage to propose new ideas, and yet his simple lifestyle — all these are a source of immense pride for all of us.

*A heartfelt salute to this great personality — an invaluable source of inspiration for the younger generation!*
