📚 NET/SET Guidance Sessions | Teaching & Research Aptitude • Language, Theories & Pedagogy

The Alumni Association, Department of English, M. K. Bhavnagar University, organised two insightful sessions as part of its NET/SET Coaching Programme, providing aspirants with focused academic guidance and practical strategies for competitive examination preparation.

On 31 August 2026, Ms. Jheel Barad conducted a focused session on “Teaching and Research Aptitude.” The session was designed to help aspirants develop a clear understanding of the different areas covered under the Teaching and Research Aptitude section of the NET/SET examination. Along with conceptual understanding, the session emphasised exam-oriented preparation, problem-solving techniques, analytical reasoning, and effective approaches to different types of questions.

The session also addressed important quantitative and analytical areas encountered by candidates, including ratios, variables, basic numerical reasoning, data interpretation, percentages, averages, logical relationships, and other problem-solving components. Particular attention was given to understanding the requirements of a question, analysing the information provided, selecting an appropriate method, and arriving at solutions efficiently. The guidance encouraged students to approach both conceptual and numerical questions with greater confidence through regular practice and strategic preparation.

Continuing this academic engagement, on 1 September 2026, Dr. Komal Shahedadpuri conducted a session on “Language, Theories and Pedagogy.” The session provided valuable guidance on essential concepts related to language, linguistic theories, pedagogy, and their relevance to NET/SET preparation. Through an interactive and insightful approach, the session encouraged students to strengthen their conceptual understanding and develop a more structured approach towards competitive examinations.
Together, these sessions provided aspirants with a valuable combination of conceptual clarity, examination-oriented strategies, analytical skills, and subject-specific guidance. The sessions also reflected the importance of learning from the experiences and expertise of the Department’s alumni while preparing for competitive examinations and future academic opportunities.

The initiative reflects the Alumni Association and Department of English’s continued commitment to providing focused learning, academic mentorship, expert guidance, and meaningful support to aspiring NET/SET candidates.

The Department of English, MKBU organised a series of intellectually engaging sessions as part of its NET-SET Guidance Sessions, bringing together literary theory, post-war criticism, and contemporary cultural studies.

On 24 and 26 August, Dr. Vishal Pandya conducted an insightful two-part session on “Literary Theory and Post-World War II Criticism.” The sessions offered students a comprehensive engagement with major theoretical and critical approaches while demonstrating how literary theory continues to resonate with contemporary cultural practices. A particularly enriching aspect of the sessions was Dr. Pandya’s integration of contemporary films, fiction, non-fiction, and popular cultural references, enabling students to connect theoretical concepts with familiar cultural texts and interpretive practices. The sessions thus transformed theory from an abstract academic framework into a dynamic tool for reading literature, cinema, society, and contemporary realities.

Continuing this interdisciplinary engagement, on 25 August, Dr. Vaidehi Haryani delivered an illuminating session on Cultural Studies. Her discussion introduced students to the ways in which culture, identity, representation, media, and everyday practices become significant sites of academic inquiry. The session encouraged learners to move beyond conventional literary boundaries and examine texts and cultural phenomena through broader social and critical frameworks.

Together, these sessions created a meaningful academic continuum—from literary theory and post-war criticism to cultural studies and contemporary cultural analysis. By bringing theoretical concepts into dialogue with films, literature, media, and lived cultural experiences, the sessions encouraged students to develop a more nuanced, interdisciplinary, and critically engaged approach to English Studies.

The initiative reflects the Department of English and CVU’s continued commitment to creating academically rigorous, contemporary, and learner-centred spaces that prepare students not only for competitive examinations such as NET and SET, but also for deeper engagement with literature, culture, and the changing intellectual landscape.

Sometimes, learning begins when we put down our books and get our hands into the soil. 🌿

On 14 August 2026, the Department of English, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University (MKBU) came together for Gardening Day, engaging in hands-on work to care for and improve the garden space.

Students actively participated in garden cleaning and plantation activities, working together to make the surroundings cleaner, greener, and more welcoming. The plantation activity was also joined by Prof. (Dr.) Dilip Barad and Prof. (Dr.) M.B.Gaijan, whose participation added a meaningful sense of togetherness to the initiative. From cleaning and organising the garden area to planting new greenery, the day reflected a shared commitment to caring for our surroundings.

The activity offered more than just an opportunity to work with plants. It encouraged values of responsibility, cooperation, environmental awareness, care, and community participation. Working together outside the classroom created a different kind of learning experience—one rooted in action, responsibility, and connection with nature.

🌿 We planted not only greenery, but also a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Gardening Day reminded us that education extends beyond books and classrooms. Sometimes, it happens through the simple act of cleaning a space, planting a sapling, working together, and caring for the world around us.

Clean. Plant. Nurture. Grow. 🌱

The One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) initiative organised an insightful online academic session on 11 August 2026 on “How to Access Taylor & Francis Journals through the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) Platform,” which was attended by the students of the Department of English, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University (MKBU).

The session introduced students to the process of accessing Taylor & Francis academic journals and scholarly resources through the ONOS platform, helping them understand how digital academic databases can support their research and learning.

For students of English and the Humanities, access to credible scholarly literature is an essential part of developing research skills, critical thinking, academic writing, and evidence-based scholarship. The session provided valuable guidance on exploring journal literature and using reliable academic sources to strengthen research work.

The interaction also highlighted the growing importance of digital literacy in higher education. In an increasingly digital research environment, knowing how to locate, access, evaluate, and use scholarly resources effectively is an important skill for every emerging researcher.

✨ From accessing journals to advancing research, the session encouraged students to move beyond the classroom and engage with the wider world of academic scholarship.

The Department of English continues to encourage students to develop the digital, research, and academic skills necessary to become informed learners and responsible researchers.

Access. Explore. Research. Learn.
