Happy Engineers Day

“The ideal engineer is a composite...He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems”
Engineers’ Day in India is celebrated on the 15th of September every year. Engineers' Day marks the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya who is also popularly known as Sir MV. Engineers' Day is observed on this day because Sir MV was literally the “Builder of India'', the builder of dams and water systems in India.
Sir MV is known as India's most prolific civil engineer, economist, dam builder and statesman. His name is amongst one of the most prominent builders of India in the 20th century. In his tenure of being the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, he completely transformed the state into a place which was then known as a “Model State''. Sir MV is known as “Father of Modern Mysore” for his numerous contributions in industrial, economic and social projects.
Engineer’s Day is celebrated to feel proud of the engineers of our country and to celebrate their achievements in each and every field of science and technology. In the economic progress and development of a country engineers play a very crucial role and contribution. The day is devoted to celebrate the past accomplishments of engineers and to glorify the future trends in engineering. The day shows the significance and importance of engineers at every step of our daily life.
A day indeed is very important to celebrate our engineers. Our lives have been simplified in various ways by the engineers. Simplicity have been brought to every complex process and all this is only because of our supremely talented engineers. Everything is online these days including online transactions, online learning, online businesses and many more and all these are made possible by engineers only. They are coming with innovations and better versions of products every day. That is why it is relevant to celebrate our engineers and their achievements on engineering day.
“The engineer has been, and is, a maker of history”
You are one who can create anything with your brains and creativity because you are an Engineer, ASCE PEC wishes you a very Happy Engineer’s Day

Ancient Wonders of the World- Kinzhi Pogost

Kizhi Pogost is a historical site dating from the 17th century on Kizhi island. The island is located on Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia (Medvezhyegorsk District), Russia. The pogost is the area inside a fence which includes two large wooden churches (the 22-dome Transfiguration Church and the 9-dome Intercession Church) and a bell-tower.
The pogost was built on the southern part of Kizhi island, on a hill 4 meters above the Lake Onega level. Its major basic structural unit is a round log of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) about 30 cm in diameter and 3 to 5 meters long. The Kizhi Pogost was built without using a single nail. Many thousands of logs were brought for construction from the mainland, a complex logistical task in that time.
The church has 22 domes and with a height of 37 meters is one of the tallest wooden buildings in Northern Europe. Its perimeter is 20×29 meters. It is considered that the 18-dome church on the southern shore of Lake Onega — built in 1708 and destroyed by fire in 1963 - was its forerunner.[6] According to the Russian carpentry traditions of that time, the Transfiguration Church was built of wood only with no nails apart from the domes and roof shingles.
The structure is covered in 22 domes of different size and shape, which run from the top to the sides. The refectory is covered with a three-slope roof. In the 19th century, the church was decorated with battens and some parts were covered with steel. It was restored to its original design in the 1950s.
In the 19th century, the churches were decorated with battens and some parts were covered with steel. Some of the original iconostasis was also replaced and lost. It was restored to its original design in the 1950s.
The Church of the Intercession (Russian: Покровская церковь) is a heated ("winter") church where services are held from October 1 until Easter. The church was the first on the island after a fire in the late 17th century destroyed all previous churches. It was first built in 1694 as a single-dome structure, then reconstructed in 1720–1749 and in 1764 rebuilt into its present 9-dome design.

Engineering Marvels of Modern World - Basilica OF Sagrada

The Sagrada Família, is a large unfinished Roman Catholic minor basilica in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Designed by Spanish/Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), his work on the building is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On 7 November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and proclaimed it a minor basilica.
On the subject of the extremely long construction period, Gaudí is said to have remarked: "My client is not in a hurry." When Gaudí died in 1926, the basilica was between 15 and 25 percent complete. After Gaudí's death, work continued under the direction of Domènec Sugrañes i Gras until interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
Parts of the unfinished basilica and Gaudí's models and workshop were destroyed during the war by Catalan anarchists. The present design is based on reconstructed versions of the plans that were burned in a fire as well as on modern adaptations.
On 19 April 2011, an arsonist started a small fire in the sacristy which forced the evacuation of tourists and construction workers. The sacristy was damaged, and the fire took 45 minutes to contain.
Gaudí's original design calls for a total of eighteen spires, representing in ascending order of height the Twelve Apostles, the Virgin Mary, the four Evangelists and, tallest of all, Jesus Christ. Eight spires have been built as of 2010, corresponding to four apostles at the Nativity façade and four apostles at the Passion façade.
The Church will have three grand façades: the Nativity façade to the East, the Passion façade to the West, and the Glory façade to the South (yet to be completed). The Nativity Façade was built before work was interrupted in 1935 and bears the most direct Gaudí influence. The Passion façade was built according to the design that Gaudi created in 1917. The Glory façade, on which construction began in 2002, will be the largest and most monumental of the three and will represent one's ascension to God.

Evolution of Leaning Structures--An Error that became a Modern Genius

Tilt was always seen as an enemy in building construction, whenever we see a really tall building, leaning even the slightest it evokes an unsettling and unsafe feeling and rightly so a building which was meant to stand up straight should do just that.

But even engineers are humans, and error is natural, the Leaning tower of Pisa is the result of one such oversight the ground beneath the tower wasn’t strong enough to hold the weight of the structure hence it tilted.

But nobody would ever want to intentionally build something like that, would they? A layman would not, but engineers are a different species, we thrive on challenge and problems. We want to do something that no one can think of doing. And the Gate of Europe is a result of just that.
