Doon University to Host National Conference on “Realising Sustainable Development in Amritkaal: Challenges & Opportunities “
India is poised to enter in a phase of a fastest growing economy despite severe setbacks it suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic. There are growing concerns to opt for a ‘green growth path’ through reduced consumption of fossil-based energy and material intensive manufacturing. At the same time, a rapid automation and increased used of IT and artificial intelligence is unfurling a new paradigm of knowledge intensive mode of production and service deliveries with decreased employment opportunities for a large labour force which yet remains less educated and unskilled/semi-skilled. The ever-rising unemployment amidst current and inert-generational inequalities point towards endangering of environmental and ecological balance. Hence, development paradigms and policy imperatives need rigorous enquiry to arrive at meaningful conclusions and suggestions for actualizing the sustainable development goals in coming decades.
These are some of the special subject of academic discussion of the 18th Annual Conference of Uttara Pradesh-Uttarakhand Economic Association (UPUEA) during 21-22 April 2023 in Doon University, Dehradun.

*Empower Uttarakhand women for accelerating Sustainable Development*
Women in Uttarakhand are growingly inching towards their empowerment. This could be possible with the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments for their participation in local governance. The expansion of education has also increased their participation in school as well as in higher education, leading to their economic empowerment. Despite lack of opportunities women at grassroot level are doing phenomenal activities. Their role during the Covid-19 pandemic is lauded for extending help to return migrants. The growing training opportunities for women are changing the landscape of Panchayat Raj Institutions. However, we have yet to travel far ahead as women still face various forms of discrimination largely due to with the patriarchal social norms. These were the points highlighted by Pallavi Bahuguna, Advocate, High Court of Uttarakhand in the Economic Discussion Forum of the Department of Economics, Doon University. suggested that first step for women empowerment would be self-realisation, that is to identify that some wrong is being done to them. She also shared her experience of the fearless life lived by Van Gujjars.
Another speaker in the Economic Discussion Forum, Dr. Kartikey Hari Gupta, Advocate, High Court of Uttarakhand deliberated on the issues of on “Sustainable Development and Law in India”. He argued how the very definition of poverty is missing environmental aspects and emphasised to view from the lens of environment. Development should not be at the cost of our future generations and the current development policy must be reviewed in this perspective, particularly aftermath the debacle of a model of development being followed in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. He illustrated his viewpoints by giving the recent examples of Joshimath subsidence, which is largely a policy failure relating to planning and implementation. This calls for integration of economic growth, social development, and environmental protection.
While presiding over the function, Prof. Rajendra Mamgain reiterated for the ‘Hill Centric Development Strategy’ for women empowerment and sustainable development. He raised his concerns about outmigration, rising income inequalities and weak economic infrastructure in hill region of the state. Prof. Harsh Dobhal and Prof. Purohit also expressed their views on the subject. The discussion was attended by Dr Reeta Rautela, Dr Madhu Bisht, Dr Rahul Saxena, Ms Harsh*ta Prajapati, Ms Vartika Singh, Angshuman Sarma, students and research scholars of school of social science.
