Centre For Early Childhood Development And Research, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jamia Millia Islamia organized an extension lecture on ‘Intervention in Early Years’ on October 11, 2022 for students of the MA (ECD) programme. The expert for the session, Ms. Nadiya Jameel, Centre Head, Potentials Therapy Centre, commenced the session with a brief introduction to the philosophy of Potentials Therapy Centre, anchored in centre’s ethos and shaped with the interplay of play, communication and interaction. The engaging session focused on power of play and discussed the benefits of play as a technique to infuse interest and curiosity among children. Discussing the cognitive and social stages of play, the session focused on how the children learn effectively through play activities. Emphasizing on the importance of Early Intervention the session concluded with how the parents can be made aware to identify the red flags during their child’s development and reach out for support. The session further focused on early intervention as a system of services to support young children with disability or developmental delay with services that may include special education, speech therapy, occupational therapy, social communication and language therapy.

Centre for Early Childhood Development & Research (CECDR), Jamia Millia Islamia organized an extension lecture on ‘Importance of Observation in ECD’ on October 20, 2022 for students of the MA (ECD) programme. Muhammed Ahsan K., an avid development practitioner and researcher was the expert for the session. The session was an extremely engaging session and provided an opportunity for students to understand the nuances of using the method of observation for data collection. The session focused on how observations rely on the sensory system to gather information of events, behavior and evidence. The feedback received from the students informed the enriched understanding they gained from the session. The understanding of conducting observation on why, when, who, what and how was an important skill learnt by them. The skill building session helped the students understand how to describe and document a naturally occurring event or behavior. It further stressed on being attentive during data collection, collecting data with care to avoid subjective bias and how to make conscious efforts to separate observation from analysis.

Centre for Early Childhood Development & Research (CECDR) organized an interactive session for the Masters students on an article of topical interest, “The McDonaldization of Childhood: Children’s Mental Health in Neo-liberal Market Cultures” authored by Sami Timimi, Lincoln University. The interactive session steered by an eminent expert, Dr Bhoomikumar Jegannathan, Director and Consultant Child Psychiatrist, Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (Caritas-CCAMH), focused on how the economic, political, social value systems and cultural contexts impact children’s wellbeing. This ecological framework further shapes how the children and their problems are conceptualized. The recent trends inform a dramatic increase in child psychiatric diagnosis with prescription of medicines for immediate solutions to manage children’s behavioural and emotional state. The article concludes with recommendations of proactive and responsive methods of treating childhood problems like family therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, humanistic therapies etc. to heal and comfort children.

Centre for Early Childhood Development & Research (CECDR) in collaboration with Breakthrough India organized a Gender Sensitization workshop for MA Early Childhood Development (MA ECD) students on 22 September 2022. The workshop entitled "Standup Against Street Harassment" was a 2 hour long exercise that has been designed to encourage young populations to effectively respond when they witness or experience street harassment. Ms Shipli, the trainer from Breakthrough India talked about what all should be considered as street harassment. She also discussed Hollaback's "5 D’s" (Direct, Distract, Delay, Delegate, & Document) and brainstormed different strategies that may be devised by bystanders to support someone who is being harassed, emphasize that harassment is not okay, and demonstrate to people in their life that they too have the power to make the institutions, streets, and communities safer places. The workshop aimed at encouraging the students to break the silence and intervene in sexual harassment to create a world wherein every individual can live a life with dignity, equality and justice. This exercise has contributed to awareness generation among the students and brainstorm intervention strategies that eventually leads to a safe campus for women.
