Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi Department of Statistics, University of Delhi was established in Aug 1973 and have been offering M.Sc, M.Phil and PhD programmes in Statistics. Professor H.C.

The Department of Mathematical Statistics was established in August 1973, though the teaching of M.A. in Mathematical Statistics had been introduced as early as in July 1957 at the initiative of Professor Ram Behari as part of a development programme adopted by the Department of Mathematics. Gupta was the first head of the Department and he can be credited with the setting up of a good school in S

tochastic Processes. In 1987, the Department of Mathematical Statistics was re-named as the Department of Statistics. The Department is running the post-graduate (M.A./M.Sc.), M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes in Statistics. In 1971, the scope of post-graduate course in Mathematical Statistics was extended leading to M.Sc. degree in Mathematical Statistics. The Department imparts rigorous training and exposure to the students in computer education by way of introducing the latest state-of-the-art in the programming language and computer software to enable to the students to perform statistical data analysis. With a view to preparing research background of the students, the M.Phil. course in Mathematical Statistics was introduced in 1977 and the same has been continually updated covering most of the topical areas of Theoretical and Applied Statistics at the specialization level. The Department has laboratories equipped with the basic and modern computing facilities. There is a good collection of books in laboratories with latest titles in various areas of statistics. Two computer laboratories with latest computing systems and related equipment have been setup in the Department for the use of students, research scholars and teachers. Regarding the job opportunities for the alumni, the Department has its own placement cell operating since academic year 2005-06. We can take pride in the fact that students get suitable placement in Research Institutes or Industries or Government Departments. Quite a few are selected in Indian Statistical Service (ISS) each year.

It was our privilege to host Mr. Devan Bhalla as the event's guest speaker Devan is an integrated marketer who is passionate about growth and strategy. He has a core interest and expertise in brand management, social media marketing, P&L management, and product development.

The session touched upon what the recruiters look for in the interviewer emphasizing on the body language and frequently asked questions.

Overall, the Workshop involved an amalgamation of thought provoking realizations and interactive exercises, providing students with a well-rounded learning experience.

Keeping this motto in mind, Udaan:The Socio-Cultural Cell of the Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi organized a Cloth Collection Drive in collaboration with the Uday Foundation where they aimed at helping the underprivileged members of our community.

Clothing is one of the basic necessities of life that some people in our society cannot afford. Through this drive, they aimed to collect clothes that can be distributed among those in need.
Students from arts , social sciences and mathematical sciences departments zestfully participated in the drive. We appreciate their generosity and support.🌸

The donations were supplied to Uday foundation so that their team can further donate clothes to those in need and would left a positive impact on someone's life📦

Credence, The Placement Cell of Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi concluded the second session of its flagship series, "Acing with Alums" with an insightful webinar by Alumnus Mr. Yash Raina. He is a 2009 graduate with over 14 years of experience in Advanced Analytics, Data Science and Management Consulting.

Yash is currently working at Fractal Analytics and manages Account Delivery and P&L for a leading CPG client. The session started with a presentation on real-world case studies that emphasized applications of various statistical concepts and tools. Sharing insights on interview preparation, he emphasized on storytelling and presenting oneself. Explaining what the companies are looking for in a candidate, he talked about the importance of keeping oneself updated with the current scenario of the industry and having an appetite for learning new things.
Session was concluded by an open Q&A session, which allowed students to gain knowledge from his expertise and skillful work.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Raina for taking the time to mentor and inspire our students. It was an exhilarating experience, and we hope to host him again in the near future.

Credence, The Placement Cell of Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi recently conducted a knowledge sharing webinar on the topic "Effective MLOps using Weights & Biases" lead by Ms. Usha Rengaraju, a renowned expert in the field of Machine Learning. She is ranked among the top ten Data Scientists in India and one of the winners of the "ML in Action" competition organised by the ML developer programs team at Google.

With " Effective MLOps: Model Development " as the central theme, the session was designed to provide valuable insights into the world of Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) and how bringing Machine Learning models to production is a challenge, with a continuous iterative lifecycle that consists of many complex components. The talk also covered a range of topics related to the use of Weights and Biases in building and deploying effective Machine Learning models.

Credence, the Placement Cell of the Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi collaborated with Mastercard to host a career-oriented session on "Present and Future of Statistics and Machine Learning in the Finance Industry." It was led by Mr. Deepak Agarwal, Senior Managing Consultant, Advisors Client Services, and moderated by Mr. Charanjit Singh, it provided valuable insights into the role of analytics in the finance industry.

Speakers explained how analytics has evolved over the years and highlighted the importance of statistics as a discipline in the finance sector. They also made it easy for students to understand how enormous data can be used to solve problems in various industries, such as Google Maps, where data helps in finding the most efficient route. Moreover, they emphasized the significance of converting data solutions into business solutions and how soft skills play an essential role in career growth in the analytics field. The session concluded with a discussion on how data drives product development, and the products, in turn, generate data.

She is a 2011 graduate with over 12 years of experience in data science, big data, and machine learning across various domains.

With "Decoding the Data Domain" as the central theme, the webinar covered crucial aspects of a student's journey from academics to the professional world. The session also offered students practical advice on improving soft skills, and being more efficient at work.

Ms. Malik further illustrated the implementation of projects in data science by presenting a case study related to real-world data. This practical application allowed students to gain valuable insights into how data science projects are executed and how theoretical concepts are translated into practical applications.

"No one ever made a decision because of number. They need a story" - Daneil Kahneman

The Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi had the honor of hosting a four-day Tableau training workshop guided by Mr. Urvinder Singh and organized by Credence, The Placement Cell. Mr. Urvinder Singh, a Data scientist at Colgate-Palmolive with over 5 years of experience, oversees AI and ML initiatives in the Asia Pacific region and leads a global team focused on developing analytics competencies.

The workshop was attended by students with enthusiasm and zeal. Several of them have already started utilizing their recently gained expertise and are competently crafting interactive Tableau dashboards and storylines. The workshop was followed by a review session, which helped the students improve further through valuable feedback on their dashboarding and design skills.

With hands-on experience creating multiple dashboards from scratch, we are certain that their investment in the newly acquired capabilities in this workshop will bolster their ability to showcase their learning. We express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Singh for generously dedicating his valuable time to guide our students. The experience was highly impactful, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome him again in the near future.

A Webinar on the topic “Preparation Strategy and tips for Indian Statistical Service examination” was organized by The Heritage Club of the Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi on National Youth Day.

The event started with a brief introduction on National Youth Day, its importance, and a warm welcome speech to welcome the guest speaker Mr. Rahul Bagaria (ISS AIR 17), an alumnus of the Department of Statistics.

The Speaker started by explaining the overall structure of the ISS Examination, followed by the key points to be taken care of during the preparation. He shared his personal experiences, strategies, tips, and tricks with participants to clear this National level Examination. An open Q&A session was taken to clear further doubts regarding the examination. Students participated enthusiastically by asking their various doubts. The webinar was very interactive throughout with more than 70 participants.

Prof C.R. Rao rightly said, if there is a problem to be solved, seek statistical advice instead of appointing a committee of experts. Statistics can throw more light than the collective wisdom of the articulate few.

Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi expresses warm wishes to the distinguished scientist and highly eminent statistician Professor Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao on the felicitous occasion of his 102nd Birth Anniversary.

He continues to serve as an inspiration to many. The Padma Vibhushan honoree's contributions to Mathematics and Statistics have been lauded with fervor and associated with bringing several changes and a greater understanding of the subjects like medicine, social sciences, public policy, finance, anthropology, national planning, and many more.

Prof. Rao is one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time and a "Senior Policy and Statistics Advisor" for the Indian Heart Association, a non-profit focused on raising South Asian cardiovascular disease awareness. Rao has been honored by numerous colloquia, honorary degrees, festschrifts, and copious awards and medals. He is the author of 14 books and has published over 400 journal publications. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of India's National Institution for Quality and Reliability (Chennai Branch) for his contribution to Industrial Statistics and the promotion of Quality Control Programs in Industries. He was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Miodrag Lovric (Editor) and Shlomo Sawilowsky, for their contribution to the International Encyclopedia of Statistical Science.

Prof. Rao's ideas continue to find new applications today. We congratulate him on a long and inspirational career. May God bless him and keep him in His grace!

It was our privilege to have Mr. Satya Prakash Mohapatra as the event's guest speaker. Presently, he is leading the Talent Acquisition function for PPG Asian Paints, India Business.

The speaker commenced the webinar by explaining the differences between online and offline interviews. He also discussed interview dos and don'ts as well as the kind of questions that students might be asked during the interviews. It was a perceptive session enjoyed by all the participants. We hope students can apply the knowledge acquired through the webinar in their upcoming interviews.

Data Is the new oil of the digital economy and SQL gives us the ability to access and execute data in its raw form.

Credence - The Placement Cell of the Department of Statistics - PG, University of Delhi organized an online workshop on SQL. We had the opportunity to have Mr. Ankit Bansal as the event’s guest speaker. Mr. Bansal is presently associated with Amazon Web Services as a Data Engineer.

It was a remarkably insightful and educational session that covered a variety of data extraction and manipulation strategies. All the attendees had a great time at the workshop. We strongly believe it will prepare them to apply SQL creatively to analyze and explore data, and demonstrate efficiency in writing queries.

We are delighted to announce that Credence - The Placement Cell successfully organized a webinar on "How to Ace HR Interviews" under the theme "Campus to Corporate - Get Ready for New Opportunities". It was our pleasure to have Mr. Karunakaran Vinayagam as the event's Guest Speaker. He is presently the Associate Vice President - Talent Acquisition at Genpact and has over 17 years of recruitment expertise in diverse domains, roles, and skills across various countries. He had been associated with some of the big companies like HCL, Accenture, etc.

The session started with the speaker sharing the dos and don'ts involved during the interview. Further, he discussed how to tackle situation-based / behavioral questions and how to gain some brownie points from the interviewer. It was a very good opportunity for participants to get their questions answered by someone who has been in the corporate world for such a long time.
