Department of Chemistry
Introduction
Dergaon Kamal Dowerah College was established in the year 1962. The Department of Chemistry came into existence in 1967 and since then it has come a long way. It is one of the oldest and largest departments of the college. From the very beginning, the major objective of the department is to create quality human resource for the country in various areas of chemi

cal science by generating and distributing quality education among the students. Since its establishment the department is one of the best among all the colleges under Dibrugarh University. The department has an affiliation to Dibrugarh University and has been offering B.Sc. Currently from 2022, the department will be offering course on M.Sc. The department also maintains its own library which is well equipped with books from all disciplines of chemistry catering to the requirements of the students. Each year the department also unleashes wall magazine prepared by the students from the degree course. Each year 45 students are admitted into the B.Sc. in Chemistry course. Students from various districts within Assam and different boards enroll in our department for the much-sought after Chemistry Honours course. The academic consistency and training imparted to the students in the department helps them to lay a strong foundation of the subject. Even during the Covid period, the faculty members left no stone unturned to facilitate a smoother teaching and learning experience to the students. Most of our students secure first class and some of them have been able to secure top three positions within the university affiliated colleges. While pursuing the undergraduate Chemistry programme in our department, some students are selected for summer training at top research institutes within India. Students graduating from our department have secured admission into leading institutes like IITs, NITs, and leading universities across India for post-graduation programme by qualifying all India entrance examinations. Making a good foundation here, many of our alumni are successfully absorbed in various central and state universities, colleges, different companies like OIL, ONGC, various Pharmaceutical companies, scientific organizations, to name a few and some of them are now holding responsible and authoritative positions in their respective areas of interest. Faculty members
The department boasts a vibrant work culture. The faculty members of the department are trained at renowned institutes of India. At present the department has 07 full time faculty members. They are committed to guide the students at any time with their valuable suggestions. They are currently actively associated with both teaching and research in Chemical Sciences. Laboratory Facilities

The department currently boasts of three modern and well-equipped Chemistry laboratories. The department has also separate laboratories for the master’s programme as well. It also has an Instrumentation Laboratory with various instruments enabling the students to carry out all the experiments included in the new syllabus as well as some projects. There is a well-stocked store for apparatus and another two for chemicals. The laboratories and stores are well maintained by two highly supportive and dedicated laboratory staff. They are:
1. Anil Hazarika
2. Pranab Jyoti Hazarika

The department is well equipped with instruments to help students carry out experiments included in their syllabus and those beyond curriculum as well. We have the latest model of UV-Vis spectrophotometer, rotary evaporator, microprocessor photocolorimeter, pH meters, conductometers, potentiometer, microwave oven, distilled water plant, multiple water bath and shakers, highly sensitive weighing balance, muffle furnace, heating oven, heating mantles, vacuum pumps, magnetic stirrer, polarimeter etc., for the benefit of the students. Syllabus
The Chemistry Degree course syllabus is prepared by Dibrugarh University under the guidance of well experienced faculties from various institutes keeping in view to match up with the syllabus across the nation. The Chemistry (Honours) syllabi is a fine balance of Inorganic, Organic and Physical chemistry along with generic elective courses like Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science etc. Emphasis is laid both on fundamental and applied part. This enables the student to opt for any of the specialized field such as Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, etc. for higher studies and research or lucrative placement in the industry. Apart from that the syllabus also includes Green Chemistry, Environment Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Bio-technology, Analytical chemistry, Instrument handling etc., which further boosts the knowledge of the students.
