The story of Holy Cross Convent and School, Dharmanagar is the story of the providential care of God as it presented itself through a business man, with whom Bethany Sisters had contact due to sale of Agarbathi produced by Jeevan Jyothi Agarbathi Centre at Kathalcherra which is also in Tripura. Sr Noeline, the then Province Coordinator of Social and Medical Apostolate was in contact with Mr Purnen
du. During one of her visits to Mr Purnendu he posed a question ‘Why not open a school in Dharmanagar as there aren’t good schools in this part of the State?”
The idea went well with the Sisters. With the encouragement of Most Rev. Lumen Monteiro, the Bishop of Agartala, decks were cleared to start the school. Sr Edleburgh, the then Provincial Superior along with her Councillors took up the challenge that was triggered by the people of Dharmanagar, and urged by the Spirit of the Lord. After a hunt, a plot of land for Bethany Sisters was purchased in 1998. In early 1999 Sr Gretta BS and Sr Janet pioneered this new venture with great enthusiasm in spite of all the hardships. The Holy Cross School at Dharmanagar had a humble beginning. It started in two little thatched huts in the town on 11 February 1999 on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes with 70 students. The School made a slow but steady progress now having 608 students on roll. It is a joy to see the students being very eager and enthusiastic. Sr Cleopha BS, by her selfless and persistent labour of love, got the school affiliated to ICSE Board Delhi. The first batch of students appeared for ICSE Board Exams in 2009. The students came out in flying colours obtaining a 100% pass result. The school has bright prospects.
