As a Part of World Plant Health Day, the NSS Unit, SGIHNS SHEDA in collaboration with the EVS Department, SGIHNS Sheda conducted a plantation drive and cleanliness drive in and around the institute premises. The programme aimed to spread awareness about the importance of plant health, environmental protection, and maintaining a clean and green surrounding. Students actively participated in planting saplings and cleaning the campus area, promoting the message of sustainable living and environmental responsibility.

World Health Day

A World Health Day program was organized at SGIHNS Sheda, Pangthang, bringing together students and teaching staffs for an important session on health and well-being. The event featured Dr. Jigmee Wangchuk Bhutia as the key speaker, who delivered an insightful and meaningful address tailored to the monastic community. He encouraged students to care not only for their physical bodies through proper hygiene and healthy habits but also to nurture their mental well-being. Highlighting the connection between a healthy mind and body, he urged them to practice mindfulness, inner discipline, and positive thinking as essential aspects of a balanced and healthy life. He further explained that in a monastic life, where discipline and routine are central, adopting healthy habits can greatly enhance both spiritual practice and overall quality of life. Clean surroundings, proper sanitation, and self-care were underscored as essential responsibilities, not only for individual health but also for the well-being of the entire community. The session was interactive, with students actively listening and reflecting on the insights shared. The program served as a valuable reminder that caring for both body and mind is crucial, and that a holistic approach to health can lead to a more harmonious and fulfilling life.

Under the direction of Vice President In-charge Aditya Golay Tamang, MLA Soreng-Chakung, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Students’ Wing visited the Sikkim Government Institute of Higher Nyingma Studies (SGIHNS Sheda) to strengthen engagement with students and institutional leadership.

The delegation was led by Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha, President of the SKM Students’ Wing-cum-Additional Political Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister, and included Bhim Kumari Sharma (Vice President-cum-Chairperson, Culture Department), Rewaj Chettri (General Secretary-cum-OSD to HCM), Dr. Neeraj Adhikari (Coordinator-cum-ITS Member), Dawa Namgyal Bhutia (Vice Convenor), Abhishek Chauhan Chettri (Executive Member), and Phuwang S***a (Executive Member), the delegation held a focused interaction with Vice Principal Venerable Karma Tshering Sherpa, Dean Dr. Neydup Bhutia, and student representatives.

The interaction was marked by constructive dialogue, with students raising key concerns related to academic infrastructure, welfare, and campus development. The delegation assured that all genuine issues would be pursued with the relevant authorities for timely redressal.

Reaffirming its commitment to student welfare and participatory governance, the SKM Students’ Wing underscored the importance of sustained engagement with student bodies to ensure that youth voices remain central to institutional and developmental progress.

Report on Official Visit to Varanasi

The Principal, Khenpo Dr. Sonam Bhutia, accompanied by Dr. Jigmee Wangchuk Bhutia, Assistant Professor, and Acharya Karma Wangyal Bhutia, Assistant Professor, of SGIHNS Sheda, undertook an official visit to Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, to attend a meeting of the Board of Studies. The meeting was convened on 27th March 2026 to deliberate upon syllabus revision and other significant academic matters concerning the Institute.

The meeting was graced by the presence of the following distinguished academicians and members:

1. Prof. Wangchuk Dorje Negi, Vice-Chancellor, Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS), Sarnath
2. Prof. Pradyuman Saha Singh, Head of the Department of Jain & Buddhist studies, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi
3. Prof. Ramesh Prasad, Head of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Darshan, Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya (SSVV), Varanasi
4. Dr. Ravi Shankar Pandey, Asst. Professor, Sanskrit Department, Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya (SSVV), Varanasi, along with other esteemed members of the Board

The following resolutions were discussed and duly approved:

1. The Board resolved to introduce the semester system for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programme, in alignment with the existing semester system already implemented in the Acharya programme.

2. It was resolved that the full marks for both Purva Madhyama and Uttar Madhyama shall be 100, with effect from the academic session 2026–27.

3. The examination scheme was approved as comprising 100 marks in total, with 75 marks allocated to external assessment and 25 marks to internal assessment. Both components shall be duly reflected in the marksheet.

4. The Board approved the introduction of Bhutia Language and Literature and Lepcha Language and Literature. These proposals have been forwarded to the higher authorities for further consideration and final approval prior to implementation.

5. The Board of Studies, RDC, Academic Council, and Official Council approved the introduction of the Ph.D. programme for the Institute. The final proposal has been submitted and is currently under consideration. It is anticipated that the programme will be introduced in the near future.

The meeting was followed by the completion of other official work related to the Institute.

Meeting on Syllabus Revision, Project of 13 Nyingma Shastras, and EMMIS of Higher Education

A meeting on the Syllabus Revision, the Project of the 13 Nyingma Shastras by Khenpo Zhenga Rinpoche, and the EMMIS of Higher Education was conducted at Sikkim Government Institute of Higher Nyingma Studies (SGIHNS) Sheda on 27th February 2026 at the Principal’s Office.

The meeting was chaired by the respected Principal, SGIHNS Sheda and was attended by the Assistant Professors of the Institute, the Coordinator of Higher Education, Education Department, Government of Sikkim, personnel from Netspeq, non-teaching staff of the Institute, and a few students for demonstration purposes.

During the session, the Coordinator of Higher Education presented a live demonstration on how to access and log in to the EMMIS portal. The demonstration also included guidance on how faculty and staff members can review and correct their own data after verification by the administrator.

Further, in accordance with the responsibilities entrusted to the Institute, a University Syllabus Drafting Committee was formally constituted during the meeting to undertake the task of revising and drafting the University syllabus.

The meeting concluded successfully with meaningful deliberations and active participation from all members present.

Sikkim Government Institute of Higher Nyingma Studies Sheda Hosts Traditional Thangka Painting Training

TAKTSE, PANGTHANG: A three-month training programme on traditional Thangka painting was successfully inaugurated today at the Sikkim Government Institute of Higher Nyingma Studies (SGIHNS) Sheda at Taktse, Pangthang. The programme is organised under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) Scheme of the Ministry of MSME, Government of India.

The SGIHNS Sheda stands not only as a hub of educational excellence but also as a custodian of living traditions. It actively promotes skill development rooted in the five great sciences (རིག་པའི་གནས་ཆེན་ལྔ་) as expounded by Buddha Shakyamuni, which hold a long and distinguished history in the region. Among these, the science of art and craftsmanship (བཟོ་རིག་པ་) is brought to life through initiatives like this training. This legacy is reflected in the institution's former alumni, such as the late Rev. Palden Lachungpa, former Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly and Sangha MLA, and Shri Bhenchungpa, distinguished personalities who embodied the essence of the artisan way.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Most Honourable Minister, Ven. Sonam Lama (Yap Council), who attended as the Chief Guest. A proud former student of the institute himself, Ven. Sonam Lama encouraged the participants with his presence. In his address, he emotionally recalled his time at the institute, stating, "For me, Sheda has always been in my heart," and affirmed, "It is my responsibility to develop Sheda."

He was accompanied by Mr. Palden Barfungpa, OSD of the Ecclesiastical Department, Officers from Commerce and Industries Department, Principal, SGIHNS Sheda.

The training is organised by the Commerce and Industries Department, Government of Sikkim, in collaboration with Palmo Handicrafts. The initiative aims to promote the sacred traditional art of Thangka painting while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local artisans and aspiring artists. From among many applicants, a total of 30 students were selected to participate in this intensive training programme.

Addressing the gathering, the Hon'ble Minister appreciated the initiative and highlighted the importance of preserving Sikkim's rich cultural heritage through skill development and capacity-building programmes. He emphasized that such trainings not only safeguard traditional art forms but also empower youth and artisans by opening avenues for self-employment and entrepreneurship.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from the 30 selected aspiring artists and artisans, reflecting a growing interest in learning and preserving the centuries-old tradition of Thangka painting.

SGIHNS Successfully Concludes SRC Elections for the Academic Session 2025–26

The Sikkim Government Institute of Higher Nyingma Studies (SGIHNS), Sheda successfully conducted the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Elections for the academic session 2025–26, achieving an exceptional voter turnout of 90%.

Out of 40 registered voters from the Shastri and Acharya programmes, 36 students cast their votes, comprising 32 male voters and 2 female voters. Although the total student enrolment exceeds 130, students enrolled in Uttar Madhyama and Purva Madhyama are not entitled to vote as per the SRC Constitution.

The polling process was held under the supervision of Ma’am Bibhuti Pradhan, Additional Secretary, Technical Education, Education Department, Government of Sikkim, who attended as the official observer. The Chief Election Officer and Polling Officers were also present at the voting centre, ensuring the smooth, transparent, and fair conduct of the elections.

The counting of votes commenced at 11:20 AM and concluded at 12:15 PM, following which the results were formally declared.

Elected SRC Executive Committee 2025–26 are as follows:
