Assam down town university’s Faculty of Science successfully conducted practical activities under the Food Packaging Technology course for the students of the Biotechnology and Microbiology programme under the guidance of Dr. Yashmin Nongrum, Assistant professor, Programme of Food Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Science.
During the practical sessions, students learned about the fundamental principles of food packaging, including product protection, shelf-life enhancement, consumer safety, sustainability, and market appeal. Special emphasis was given to eco-friendly and biodegradable packaging solutions to promote environmental responsibility within the food industry. Students were also introduced to important aspects of packaging development such as labelling design, colour strategy, branding, promotion, advertising techniques, and understanding consumer preferences, helping them understand the role of packaging in influencing purchasing decisions.
As part of the assignment, students designed and developed several dummy eco-friendly packaging prototypes with future commercial potential. The innovative prototypes featured creative branding concepts and unique product names such as Colour Eat, Biome, Coconique, One Shot, and Bat Bite, reflecting both sustainable packaging ideas and market-oriented thinking.
The activity provided valuable experiential learning opportunities by encouraging teamwork, innovation, creativity, and problem-solving skills while motivating students to explore sustainable and eco-friendly approaches in the future food packaging industry.
