DBT-NER Advance Level Institutional Biotech Hub, Chaiduar College (Autonomous), Promotes Sustainable Entrepreneurship via Mushroom Cultivation
The DBT-NER Advanced Level Institutional Biotech Hub, Chaiduar College (Autonomous), Gohpur Assam has recently initiated an “Entrepreneurship Development through Mushroom Cultivation” programme across its five adopted villages namely, Pub Ghagra, Nalbari, Madhya Sonapur, Langdangpara, and Deunabori of Gohpur Assam. The central aim of this initiative is to impart scientific training and promote community-based entrepreneurship as a pathway to sustainable livelihoods.
The project’s inauguration took place on August 13, 2025, at Pub Ghagra, one of the college’s adopted villages. Representatives from all five villages attended the event, which was marked by the presence of Mr. Pradip Basumatary (President) and Mr. Narayan Hazarika (Secretary) of Pub Ghagra. Dr. Raju Ojah, Project Investigator of the Biotech Hub, presented the project’s objectives and assured the community of technical and financial assistance. Dr. Ojah also formally inaugurated the programme. Mr. Prasanta Saikia, Coordinator of Adopted Villages, highlighted the significance of mushroom cultivation for augmenting rural incomes and fostering sustainable entrepreneurship during his welcome address. Furthermore, Mr. Robert Dahanga, acting as Resource Person, conducted an in-depth technical session covering various mushroom species, cultivation techniques, and the economic potential inherent in mushroom farming. Senior Project Associate Dr. Ranjit Kakati and Laboratory Assistant Mr. Aziz Hussain also participated in the interactive session, encouraging attendees to embrace mushroom cultivation as a viable livelihood strategy.
Subsequently, a Hands-on Training Programme was held on September 9, 2025, offering practical demonstrations of mushroom cultivation steps and the distribution of essential materials such as mushroom spawn and PPE bags. The training, inaugurated by Dr. Raju Ojah and conducted by Mr. Robert Dahanga, detailed procedures including cutting and boiling paddy straw, hygienically drying it, and layering it within PPE bags alongside mushroom spawn. Further, Mr. Dahanga instructed participants on appropriate bag sealing and hanging methods to maximize mushroom yield.
The active participation and enthusiasm shown by villagers across all five adopted communities was noteworthy. At the conclusion of the training, representatives from each village received mushroom spawn and associated cultivation materials.
Community members have shown strong support for the Biotech Hub’s initiative, recognizing mushroom cultivation as a credible and sustainable economic opportunity. Villagers have expressed their commitment to applying the skills and knowledge gained, with expectations for fruitful harvests in the future.
Overall, through this programme, the Biotech Hub has reaffirmed its dedication to establishing mushroom cultivation units within all five adopted villages, thereby advancing rural entrepreneurship and community development through applied biotechnology.
