For every parent their child is their greatest treasure. There is nothing more precious and important than their child for any parent. They protect and preserve their child more than anything else. The rich and vast culture and tradition of India offers various opportunities to showcase one’s love and concern for their child and Prathamastami is one such festival. This is a festival especially celebrated in the state of Orissa, where the parents perform certain rituals for the longevity and prosperity of the eldest child of the family. This festival is mostly performed by the elder female members of the family where they offer a lighted lamp ovation along with the recitation of certain mantras. This festival is observed on the day of Ashtami, i.e. the month of Margashirsha which usually falls on the eight days of Karthik Purnima. It is a very special family function where the mother and her relatives perform the special ritual where they take aarati of the eldest child. All the items necessary for the ritual has to be provided by the maternal uncle of the child. On this day they also worship Ganesha, Shasti Devi and the family deity.
