The D words of Dissent and Democracy have been doing the rounds in our campus for the last two months as we struggle to maintain a space of reason in the contest of Thars and starched white shirts. From the constant echoes of repetitive, unfulfilled promises to being told to "behave yourselves" when expressing frustration towards a political body dominated by grown men flaunting their money and muscle power, much unfolded that day. Most of it, however, felt like a predictable piece of theatre, marked by dramatic highs and lows. Being one of the very few colleges that bring about an annual presidential debate as a part of the MH/DUSU elections, many of the empty seats at Miranda House auditorium scattered all over from the beginning of the manifesto reading to the end of it, in what people generally called a "tiny" auditorium -whenever they were not able to access entry to hear people like S. Jaishankar or Smriti Irani speak- got tired of the monotony of the same offers being made since the past decade, of the same rules being broken, of hearing this entire process being called democratic all the while candidates not even bothering to adhere to the Lyngdoh committee guidelines that are meant to ensure a free, fair, and equal election process. Not to mention last year’s low voter turnout, which begs the question: are people growing tired of this whole spectacle of what we choose to call "democracy" or can most of the crowd in Miranda House afford to be indifferent to the candidates and their promises, and can they simply choose to forgo the voting process under the guise of maintaining an "apolitical" stance?
