On his birth centenary, the Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University, pays tribute to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the mass communicator who made communication deeply human. He showed us that the most powerful message is one in which people recognise their own lives, their struggles and their hope. His voice did not merely reach the masses. It became their voice.

The last few lines hit differently when you know the story behind them.

“অসম দেশৰ বাগিচাৰে ছোৱালী” sounds playful. There is ঝুমুৰ, there is মাদল, there is Chameli. But underneath all that is the story of a community that came to Assam, worked in its tea gardens, and slowly made Assam their own.

The song brought their language, folk traditions and everyday life into popular music at a time when their voices were rarely heard beyond the tea gardens.

In this episode of “Dr Bhupen Hazarika as a Community Communicator,” Ms Dhrupadi Bezbarua, FYIMP 7th Semester, 2026, looks at this song and the community behind it.

A song can make you dance.
Sometimes, it also makes you stop and listen.

We are all in the same boat.

“আমি একেখন নাৱৰে যাত্ৰী” is Bhupen Hazarika’s simple yet powerful reminder that, despite all our differences, we share the same sky, the same earth and the same journey.

And if one end of the boat is shaken, none of us remains untouched.

In this episode of “Dr Bhupen Hazarika as a Community Communicator,” Mr Nishanta Sharma, Teaching Associate, Department of Communication and Journalism, reflects on a song that speaks about coexistence, conflict and our shared responsibility as human beings.

Different eyes. Different lives. One boat.

On Teachers’ Day , we remember Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, whose life reminded us that teaching is not simply about giving knowledge, but about helping others discover their own minds.

As a department that believes in the power of questions, conversations and critical thinking, we offer our Guru Vandana to all those teachers who have encouraged us to question, listen, think deeper and see the world a little differently.

To every teacher who made a difference, often without even knowing it, thank you.

Happy Teachers’ Day.

Not every story finds its way into the history books.

“অতীতৰ বুৰঞ্জী লিখকে লিখিছিল” reminds us of the stories that are often left behind.

From the farmers of the Nile and the workers of Mississippi to the people of the Brahmaputra, Bhupen Hazarika brings their pain, struggles and dreams into one powerful human story.

In this episode of “Dr Bhupen Hazarika as a Community Communicator,” Mr. Ajay Sarkar, PhD Research Scholar, Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University, explores the song through comparative analysis and ethnomusicology.

A song that makes us pause and remember those whose voices may never have reached the pages of history.

Because people’s stories are history too.
