Bicycles are not a common tool in economic science, but Amartya Sen's bicycle played a role in his research.

A large part of his work is concerned with the conditions of the poorest members of society and how these can be improved. In a study on differences between baby girls and boys, Sen employed an assistant to weigh the children. Problems arose when the children did not want to weighed and bit the assistant. The episode ended with Amartya Sen bicycling through the countryside of West Bengal, weighing the children himself.

Amartya Sen was awarded the prize in economic sciences in 1998 for his studies of social choice, welfare measurement and poverty research.

When the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded 25 years ago, recognising contributions to the early developments of microelectronics and photonics, most computers occupied half of your desk space, phones weren’t smart and artificial intelligence only existed in science fiction.

The advent of the transistor in 1947 heralded the dawn of a new age, but emerging computers needed tens of thousands of them on a single circuit board whose assembly was a time-consuming and error-prone task. Almost a decade later, Jack Kilby solved this problem by designing a circuit out of tiny components made together with the transistors, directly on the surface of a single crystal of semiconducting material. The components were fabricated in a series of steps using a photo lithographic-like pattern transfer process. On 12 September 1958, he demonstrated a working integrated circuit, today called a ’chip’.

“Breakthroughs are born out of unusual circumstances.”

Shuji Nakamura (中村修二) was awarded the Nobel Prize for developing the blue LED.

Discover Shuji's sometimes rocky journey to becoming the co-inventor of the blue LED in his fascinating Nobel Prize biography:

Shuji Nakamura Biographical Shuji Nakamura was born on May 22, 1954 in Oku, a tiny fishing village on the Pacific coast of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four main islands. Farming is the principle occupation in Oku. Local farmers grow yams on steps cut into steep hillsides. Shuji’s maternal g...
