๐ŸŽฏ How ordinary citizens built an extraordinary democracy! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณโœจ

The Department of Political Science at University of Hyderabad hosted a book discussion featuring Professors Rohit De (Yale University) and Ornit Shani (University of Haifa) on their book, Assembling Indiaโ€™s Constitution: A New Democratic History! ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Key highlights from the discussion:

๐Ÿ“ Beyond the Assembly: Constitution-making extended far beyond elite debates in New Delhi. Thousands of petitions, letters, and regional discussions showed how everyday citizens across provinces and princely states shaped the founding text.
๐Ÿ“ Public Reasoning: Diverse groups framed community-specific demands through shared public reasoning, turning constitutionalism into an active medium for social transformation.
๐Ÿ“ Diverse "Publics": The authors emphasized how distinct local and regional "publics"โ€”from district groups to the Khasi publicโ€”negotiated federalism, minority protections, and rights.
๐Ÿ“ Nuanced Debates: Discussants and faculty explored critical questions on economic rights, constitutional discretion, and how pressures from below influenced the final text adopted in 1949.

Special thanks to Head of Department Prof. K.Y. Ratnam, Session Chair Prof. Jyotirmaya Sharma, and discussants Anupama S. Krishnan, Dr. Anagha Ingole, and Prof. K.K. Kailash for an engaging session! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Building safer, more inclusive campuses together! ๐Ÿ‘ฅโœจ

The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at the University of Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Womenโ€™s Safety Wing of the Telangana Police, successfully organized the 3rd programme under the SAHAS Gender Sensitization initiative at the School of Engineering Sciences and Technology (SEST)!

Key highlights from the workshop:

๐Ÿ“ Wide Participation: Over 170 enthusiastic students from the School of Physics and SEST attended and actively participated in the interactive session.
๐Ÿ“ PoSH Act Insights: Ms. Asiya Sherwani (Head, SAHAS Team) and Advocate Ms. Shravani broke down the PoSH Act with real-world examples, explaining actions that constitute sexual harassment.
๐Ÿ“ Reporting & Support: Students gained clear guidance on how to report grievances and utilize the institutional ICC mechanisms effectively.

Special thanks to Inspector Ms. P. Surekha, Prof. V.V.S.S. Srikanth (Dean, SEST), Prof. Jai Prakash Gautam, and Prof. Lalitha Guruprasad (Presiding Officer, ICC) for facilitating this impactful session! ๐Ÿ™Œ Safe campuses start with awareness! ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿ“ธ A blast from the past: the Department of History, University of Hyderabad โ€” 1987.

Six lecturers, one long teakwood table, a rotary phone, a stack of files, and an agenda that never quite ended.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ This was the Golden Threshold era. UoH was born in 1974 in Sarojini Naidu's home Nampally Station Road, bequeathed to the University by Padmaja Naidu โ€” and it was from those ten rooms in Abids that the social sciences and humanities first taught, argued, examined and dreamed. The move to Gachibowli came only in 1988, a year after this frame was captured.

Shared by Prof. K. S. S. Seshan and posted by Prof. Rekha Pande, the photograph was taken when Prof. K. S. Mathew headed the Department and everyone in the frame was still a lecturer โ€” Prof. Aloka Parasher Sen, Prof. P. Sudhir, Prof. K. S. S. Seshan, Prof. Kameshwari Jandhyala and Prof. Rekha Pande.

โœ๏ธ Prof. Pande remembers a Head who kept everyone on their toes โ€” conferences, lectures, syllabus revisions, one after another, all of it to be implemented yesterday. As a colleague put it in Telugu:

เฐ†เฐกเฐชเฐฟเฐฒเฑเฐฒ เฐชเฑ†เฐณเฑเฐฒเฐฟ เฐšเฑ‡เฐธเฐฟเฐจเฐŸเฑเฐŸเฑ เฐนเฐกเฐพเฐตเฑเฐกเฐฟ

(ฤ€แธapilla peแธทแธทi cฤ“sinaแนญแนญu haแธฤvuแธi) โ€” with the frantic haste of arranging a daughter's wedding. ๐Ÿ˜„

In an age before mobile phones, when a photograph was a rare and deliberate act, an image like this becomes a precious possession. Nearly four decades on, these are the faces that built a Department โ€” and a University. ๐ŸŽ“

With gratitude to Prof. K. S. S. Seshan and Prof. Rekha Pande for opening the album.

Highlights of the Shot:

Luminous Canopy: Vibrant foliage dramatically illuminated against the deep night sky.

Quiet Pathways: Crisp, paved walkways framing a peaceful evening scene near campus checkpoints.

Night Ambience: A vivid interplay between warm golden streetlights and cool nocturnal shadows.

Congratulations to Rajesh Kavvuri for capturing this stunning perspective of our campus! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Interactive Session: Assembling Indiaโ€™s Constitution ๐Ÿ“œ

The Department of Political Science under the School of Social Sciences at the University of Hyderabad hosted an engaging interactive session featuring distinguished historians Prof. Rohit De (Yale University) and Prof. Ornit Shani (University of Haifa)! ๐ŸŽ“โœจ

The discussion centered around their co-authored book, Assembling Indiaโ€™s Constitution: A New Democratic History (Cambridge University Press, 2025), bringing together scholars and students across disciplines for a rich intellectual exchange. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿค

Key Session Highlights:

๐Ÿ”น Everyday Constitutionalism: Prof. Rohit De highlighted how constitutional meanings aren't just fixed by state bodies, but actively fashioned by ordinary citizens in everyday society.
๐Ÿ”น Fieldwork & Archival Traces: Prof. Ornit Shani shared valuable methodology insights from her research journey, reminding scholars to "let the field teach you" and keep detailed research diaries.
๐Ÿ”น Vibrant Multidisciplinary Q&A: A dynamic exchange exploring land acquisition laws, the social history of nomadic tribes, identity politics, and archival methodologies. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ๐Ÿ’ญ

A inspiring exploration of how constitutional history is shaped from the ground up! ๐ŸŒŸ
