The Department of Fine Arts, Sarojini Naidu School, University of Hyderabad Alumni, Students and Staffs, Department of Fine Arts,
University Of Hyderabad.

The Department of Fine Arts was established in 1988 at the University of Hyderabad alongside the Departments of Dance, Theater and Communication to form the Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication. The aim was to bring the various artistic practices within a single broader academic program in order to interrogate, more systematically, the communicative aspects of the aesthetic traditions,

and the aesthetic dimensions of communication systems. Although it began with only the discipline of Painting, the Department of Fine Arts has, over the years, grown to offer two-year MFA courses in Painting, Print Making and Sculpture. The MFA Program in Art History and Visual Studies was the most recent addition to the Department in 2010. The Department of Fine Arts was established under the stewardship of eminent artists Laxma Goud, D L N Reddy, R S Sham Sunder, and other young faculty members, and has over the years grown and developed into a premier Art School in the country. The pedagogical commitment has been to provide a space for a serious art practice that can be freely carried out in a supportive, challenging and enriching environment. The faculty endeavor to inculcate a strong work ethic in the students while motivating them towards achieving a sense of independence, self-esteem and joy in their accomplishments. The increasing visibility and growing list of achievements of its alumni in the world of Contemporary Indian Art bear testimony to these claims.

เฌ˜เฌพเฌธ | Grass

Solo Exhibition by Saroj Kumar Badatya

Curated by Paribartana Mohanty
(Multimedia Artist)

The Department of Fine Arts warmly invites you to an exhibition that unfolds through ecology, memory, and material exploration โ€” where grass becomes a living archive connecting landscape, culture, and contemporary practice.

Saroj Kumar Badatya is a visual artist based in Odisha and currently serves as Visiting Faculty in the Department of Fine Arts, University of Hyderabad. His practice explores ecology, indigenous knowledge, and the fragile relationship between humans and landscape. Working with natural pigments, cloth, bamboo, sound, and printmaking processes, his research traces disappearing grasses, abandoned sites, and shifting cultural memory โ€” creating immersive installations that connect art, environment, and community narratives.

THE POET OF THE MUNDANE

A Tribute to Prof. B.V. Suresh

On 21st Nov 2025 in the Conference Hall, department of fine art, S.N. School , we gather with deep respect and gratitude to celebrate Prof. B.V. Suresh as he retires after more than three decades of shaping ideas, practices, and generations of artists.

His teaching taught us to see the everyday with honesty, to question power with courage, and to understand art as a form of truth-telling. nurtured courage, and created spaces where students learned to think critically, disagree with confidence, and find their own voice.

Students, alumni, colleagues, friends, and leading practitioners from across India came together today to honour a mentor whose presence has quietly transformed the culture of this department.

Thank you, Suresh Sir, for your clarity, integrity, and the freedom you gave your students to think and imagine.

Today, we celebrate you.
