“This course is more than a class to me—it’s a stepping stone toward becoming a cultural ambassador,”
Khilimet Hansepi from Dokmoka, Karbi Anglong, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. She will embark on a six-month academic and cultural study trip to Taiwan, marking a significant milestone in her language-learning journey.
Hansepi began learning Mandarin in 2024 at the Taiwan Education Center at Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), the first institute in Northeast India to offer Mandarin courses taught by native Taiwanese lecturers. In March 2025, she passed the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL), making her eligible for the Huayu scholarship. Her selection was further endorsed by her mentor, Ms. Kuei-Mi LI.
Funded by Taiwan’s government, the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship aims to deepen cultural exchange between Taiwan and India. Recipients receive a monthly stipend of 25,000 NTD (around ₹65,447). For Hansepi, the award represents the fulfillment of a 13-year-long dream: “It feels magical. My teacher Kuei-Mi LI Laoshi is my biggest inspiration.”
Hansepi describes ADBU's Mandarin classes as both "fun and disciplined," involving interactive discussions, video assignments, and even singing. Her dedication also led her to a job at the Taipei World Trade Centre’s Kolkata liaison office, where she managed international delegates—further highlighting the career value of multilingualism.
“This course is more than a class to me—it’s a stepping stone toward becoming a cultural ambassador,” Hansepi said. She hopes her journey inspires others to pursue Mandarin and Taiwan-based opportunities, encouraging students to embrace cultural learning as a path to global connection.
With her scholarship, Hansepi looks forward to exploring Taiwan’s culture, language, and people while contributing to cross-cultural understanding between the two regions.
