Department of Botany, University of Jammu This is the official page of the Department of Botany, University of jammu. The Department has also successfully completed some consultancy projects.

Teaching at the Post Graduate Level in the University of Jammu commenced in 1971 to meet the aspirations of the students of this region. The Department was established to train the students desirous of learning, understanding, teaching and practicing various aspects of plant sciences. Courses were designed to take care of both the classical and contemporary aspects of Botany. Within a short span,

the Department earned a name as an important centre of studies in Botany in the country. The hard work put in by the teachers and more so the students started yielding dividends right from the very beginning. Alumni of the department have excelled in fields as varied as teaching, research and administration. While in the initial stages the students had the option of specializing either in Cytogenetics, Mycology or Ecology and Limnology, the department now has both the expertise and infrastructure to help students opt for getting advanced training in many other ares of specialization such as Molecular genetics, Biosystematics, Reproductive biology, Plant pathology, Tissue culture and Bryology. With the help of grants received from various funding agencies (UGC, DST, DBT, GBPIHED, NRSA etc.) the department is now in a position to let its students unravel the intricacies of plant life even at the molecular level. While conducting research has been an important part of our academics and our research projects have been financed by various national funding agencies from time to time, Research projects worth over Rs. 50 lac are being operated by the staff members.

In a prestigious ceremony held at the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, all the faculty members, research scholars and students of the department celebrated the remarkable achievement of Ms. Anmol Rathore who secured 7th rank in the coveted 2023 Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams. She is the daughter of a proud mother, Dr. Jayoti Parihar, an alumnus of the department, who is presently the Principal Govt. Degree College of Education, Jammu. Ms. Anmol Rathore hailing from Udrana, a remote village in Bhaderwah, emerged as a shining star amongst thousands of aspirants, showcasing exceptional dedication, perseverance, and intelligence. She had also topped in the last year’s Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Services (JKAS) exams. Her stellar performance in the UPSC exams has not only brought personal glory but is also an inspiration to the aspiring students of the department and countless other aspirants dreaming of a career in civil services. Her exemplary academic record is showcased as she qualified the common law admission test (CLAT) in 2016 and completed her graduation in law in 2021 and cleared the prestigious examination in her third attempt even after she missed the 2022 mains cut-off list by just two marks. Prof. Susheel Verma, Head of the Department, highlighted the exemplary academic record, strategic preparation, of the young achiever and lauded her commitment to the public service and the importance of ethical leadership in shaping the nation's future. Her mother, an alumnus of the Department of Botany shared the stories of challenges Ms. Anmol overcame throughout the course of this extraordinary journey and how she became a support system for her daughter as she strived for excellence.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Anmol Rathore, expressed gratitude to her family, teachers, and mentors who supported and guided her throughout her UPSC journey. She emphasized upon how she was able to crack the examination without joining any coaching institute and how she utilized the free study material available on YouTube and Telegram and turned these resources which are now easily accessible to everyone into her success story. She inspired the students by sharing the challenges she faced on her ladder to success and how one can turn any obstacle into an opportunity with the right mindset and dedication. As Ms. Anmol Rathore embarks on a new chapter of public service, her success serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for aspiring civil servants of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the entire country. The department felicitated Ms. Anmol with a memento, and wished her continued success in her endeavors to make a positive influence in the service of the nation

6 days training cm workshop on "Capacity Building in Molecular Taxonomy" was organised by Department of Botany in collaboration with MMTTC ,University of Jammu. It was attended by by 37 participants across various colleges and sister Universities of the UT of J&K as also by scholars of the department .Prof Susheel Verma, Head of the Department was Convenor of the workshop while Dr Sajan Thakur and Dr Abhishek Dutta were the co convenors
The workshop content was rich and covered a wide range of topics in molecular taxonomy. The sessions were well-structured and informative, providing valuable insights into the latest developments in the field.
The expertise of the resource persons Dr. Ritesh Kumar Choudhary from Agarkar institute,Pune and Dr. Ashwini M. Darshetkar from Shavitri Bhai Phule University,Pune greatly enhanced the learning experience. Their depth of knowledge and ability to explain complex concepts in an understandable manner were commendable.
Prof. Susheel Verma’s efforts as the organizer were evident in the smooth ex*****on of the workshop. The logistics were well-managed, and the sessions were conducted punctually.
The interactive nature of the sessions facilitated active participation and engagement among the participants.
The workshop provided a platform for networking with peers and experts in the field, fostering collaboration and future opportunities for research and professional development
