The BITSLAW Writing Centre (BWC) conducted a workshop on How to Write an Introduction, titled “Wait! How do I even start?”. The workshop discussed multiple ways in which one can write an effective introduction to their paper. Through the discussions, it also demonstrated to the students how an introduction incorporates the thesis statement for the paper and grabs the attention of the readers.

In this session, the students participated in two exercises which involved reading two different papers of different tone, form, and genres to analyse the necessary elements that should be present in an introduction and how they can incorporate the same in their own writing, as part of their training as new-age legal professionals and thinkers.

In an article published by Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Anthropology, Oxford University Press titled “Property Rights: Disciplinary Debates and Policy Approaches (India),” Prof. (Dr.) Kaveri Haritas, Professor of Sociology at , explores how the disciplines of law, economics, and anthropology have shaped our understanding of property rights and impacted policies on access to property.

Her work examines the conflict between law and economics scholars, who have propounded private individual ownership as the normative model, and anthropologists, who critique this approach as not reflective of the reality of property rights that do not always conform to this norm and hence are denied. It underlines the paradoxes inherent in the application of the bundle of rights approach to market transactions, while denying a similar view of disaggregated rights to claims made by groups outside the domain of the market.

The article highlights how property rights upheld and allocated by the capitalist state tend to gravitate toward wealthier market participants, while measures to provide titles to property-less citizens are defeated. The implications of these disciplinary approaches are discussed using the example of slum residents in India and the impact titling programs have had on them.

We recently hosted Dr. Rovel Sequeira (Assistant Professor, Women’s and Gender Studies, University of Michigan) for a lecture titled “Queering the Prison: Criminal Intimacies and the Minor Revolutionary Life of Homosexuality in Colonial India.” In his talk, Dr. Sequeira situated early 20th-century colonial prisons in Calcutta and the Andamans as laboratories for sexual science, where medical officers studied intimacy, desire, and so-called sexual “deviance” among inmates. He showed how these investigations reshaped prison architecture, moving from association-based to solitary confinement, and shifted from anatomical observation to reading prisoners’ letters and writings, framing Indian homosexuality as a problem of racial and cultural excess.

Dr. Sequeira further traced how the colonial state suppressed such studies to prevent wider backlash from exposure of sexual activities among inmates in prisons, particularly as these sites also housed nationalist leaders and political prisoners. The talk explored how colonial prisons in India shaped ideas of sexuality, intimacy, discipline and survival, from John Mulvany’s penological and sexological experiments to prisoners’ personal letters and short fiction such as Ugra's 'Jail Mein'.

The lecture, by examining the evolution of prison settlements and the culturally biased and racist narratives surrounding inmate interactions for pleasure, reflected on an imperial “will-to-ignorance” as a deliberate refusal to know. It offered an alternative way of understanding sexuality in colonial India, contrasted with the European paradigm of the “will-to-knowledge.”
