He receives this honor "for his stunning proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem by way of the modularity conjecture for semistable elliptic curves, opening a new era in number theory." Peter Scholze, Hausdorff Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bonn, will be awarded the 2015 AMS Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Algebra at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in January in San Antonio, Texas for "his work on perfectoid spaces which has led to a solution of an important special case of the weight-monodromy conjecture of Deligne."
