In Memoriam | Prof. Samar Kumar Roychowdhury

It is with profound sorrow that IIT Kharagpur mourns the passing of Prof. Samar Kumar Roychowdhury, former Professor and distinguished alumnus (1962–67) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Prof. Roychowdhury devoted more than two decades of exemplary service to the Institute and made enduring contributions to the fields of Tribology, Machine Design, Friction, Wear, and Lubrication. A respected scholar, inspiring teacher, and compassionate mentor, he touched the lives of generations of students and colleagues, many of whom went on to shape academia and industry.

His journey—from being among the early batches of Mechanical Engineering students at IIT Kharagpur to becoming a revered faculty member—epitomised a lifelong commitment to knowledge, excellence, and service. His intellectual depth, humility, and generosity of spirit earned him the admiration and affection of the entire IIT Kharagpur community.

As we mourn the loss of a distinguished academic and a cherished member of our family, we celebrate a life dedicated to advancing engineering education and nurturing future generations.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former students, and colleagues. May they find strength and solace during this difficult time.

May his noble soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti.

IIT Kharagpur and Birla Institute of Technology Mesra have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to foster collaboration in research, academics, innovation, and capacity building.

The signing brings together two institutions with roots in the decade immediately after Indian independence. IIT Kharagpur, founded in 1951 as the first IIT and recognised as an Institute of National Importance, and BIT Mesra, established in 1955 and elevated to the status of a Deemed University in 1986, share a common commitment to advancing knowledge and creating societal impact through science and technology.

The collaboration encompasses joint supervision of Master's and Ph.D. scholars, collaborative research projects, student and faculty exchanges, internships, shared access to research facilities, intellectual property development and commercialisation, faculty development initiatives, and joint academic programmes including seminars, workshops, GIAN courses, and micro-credit offerings. Both institutions will also explore integrated M.Tech.–Ph.D. and dual-degree pathways.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director IIT Kharagpur, and Prof. Indranil Manna, Vice Chancellor, BIT Mesra, in the presence of senior faculty members from both institutions. Reflecting the spirit of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the partnership seeks to strengthen interdisciplinary research and innovation ecosystems while addressing emerging areas of national importance, including artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, energy, climate resilience, water resources, and defence technologies.

Together, IIT Kharagpur and BIT Mesra reaffirm their shared vision of nurturing talent, fostering innovation, and advancing India's scientific and technological development.
