IMI Kolkata was honored to host Mr. Pushpak Chatterjee, Deputy General Manager (Finance) & Head of Project Design at Steel Authority of India (SAIL), for an illuminating guest lecture on "Financial Management II." Mr. Chatterjee provided a profound deep dive into the high-stakes world of the steel industry, where massive capital expenditures and market volatility demand strategic agility. He emphasized that in a cyclical industry, financial professionals must act as strategic arbiters, balancing the heavy interest burdens of CapEx with the need for rapid, proactive decision-making.

The session explored the evolving competitive landscape of steelmaking, moving beyond simple production volume to focus on Delivery Reliability (OTD) and environmental sustainability. Students learned that in a network-centric market, minor delays can have million-dollar consequences, making responsiveness a primary differentiator. Mr. Chatterjee also highlighted the growing scrutiny on carbon footprints and the financial implications of "green steel" in global trade. By examining the operational trade-offs between marketing and production, our students gained a holistic understanding of how to translate long-term corporate strategy into actionable operational rules.

Ultimately, the lecture positioned financial management as the cornerstone of industrial survival and growth. By exposing our future leaders to the real-world dynamics of commodity pricing, legacy cost structures, and technological intensity, IMI Kolkata ensures they are equipped to navigate volatile global markets with strategic foresight.
