Geological Institute, Presidency University, Kolkata Geological Institute was established in the year 1905 as a student-run academic organization, unique of its kind in at least Asia.

The Geological Institute was set up in the year 1905, in the Department of Geology, Presidency University, Kolkata (erstwhile Presidency College, founded on July 17, 1892). It is a student-run academic organisation, the first of its kind in Asia, established to foster extra-academic acumen among the earth-science community by organising seminars, workshops, meetings and journal publications. The a

nnual journal of the Geological Institute, Bhu-Vidya, a bilingual annual is intended to help students venture, think and express beyond their class-room learning, on the very strength of the latter itself. The Institute also aims to establish and maintain close relationships with all its members, which includes all the alumni and ex-faculty of the Department of Geology, Presidency University, considering it as a duty and something that is essential to uphold its integrity. The Institute will strive to prosper and fulfill the motives of the organisation in the years ahead and will achieve greater heights with their diligent endeavours.

The Geological Institute, Department of Geology, Presidency University successfully hosted an engaging and intellectually enriching academic discussion titled “Two ages, one grain: Tracking the pace of crustal exhumation by zircon U-Pb and (U-Th)/He double dating.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Akeek Maitra, a dedicated Postdoctoral Associate from the University of Calgary, Canada.

The session was highly insightful, providing a comprehensive understanding of advanced geochronological techniques and applications in deciphering crustal exhumation processes. Dr. Maitra's clear and structured presentation encouraged critical thinking and active interaction among students and researchers.

The Geological Institute, Department of Geology, Presidency University, successfully hosted an engaging and intellectually stimulating lecture on “Basalts as Archives of Earth’s Deep-Time Evolution,” delivered by Mr. Subhadeep Roy, doctoral researcher at Queensland University of Technology, Australia.

The lecture was highly thought-provoking, offering deep insights into the role of basalts as recorders of Earth’s mantle processes and long-term geodynamic evolution. Mr. Roy’s clear articulation of concepts, supported by real research examples, encouraged critical thinking and active discussion among students and researchers.

This was followed by a hands-on workshop on geochemical data repositories, data handling, and visualization using Python, which proved to be immensely beneficial. The practical session enabled participants to approach geochemical datasets more efficiently, develop problem-solving skills, and gain confidence in applying computational tools for data analysis and visualization.

We sincerely thank Mr. Subhadeep Roy for an enriching academic experience and all participants for their enthusiastic engagement, which made the session both interactive and impactful.

On January 8, 2026, the Geological Institute of Presidency University organized a warm and informative orientation programme for its incoming students. The session provided a comprehensive introduction to the institute, its distinguished faculty, key research areas, and the diverse academic opportunities offered by the department.

Members of the Geological Institute Committee introduced themselves and outlined their role in representing student interests while organizing academic and co-curricular activities throughout the year. The programme also highlighted the department’s vibrant extra-curricular culture, various conferences that were organised and the main idea and vision of Bhu-Vidya, which is the annual departmental journal, were explained, emphasizing its role in showcasing students’ research work, scientific writing, and creative expression.

The Geological Institute extends a cordial welcome and best wishes to the new students and looks forward to supporting them throughout their academic journey and future achievements within the department.

As in every year, before commencing the AGM, we paused to remember those who are no longer with us. However, this year the moment of remembrance was marked by a profound and heavier sadness. We paid heartfelt tribute to our beloved senior, Mr. Arpan Purkait, an esteemed alumnus of the department. He was a dedicated and respected member of the Geological Institute, he served with unwavering commitment as the Editor of Bhu-Vidya. His passion, integrity, and selfless service will continue to inspire us, and his memory will remain forever etched in our hearts.

We are delighted to announce that our 102th Annual General Meeting was successfully organised on 23rd of December, 2025.

The meeting started in the presence of our Guest of Honour, Professor Pinaki Sar, Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, IIT KHARAGPUR along with the respected alumni, all the faculty members and students. We are also honoured to have the senior-most alumnus of the Geological institute, Professor Dhrubajyoti Mukhopadhyay. The lamp was lit by Professor Pinaki Sar, Professor Dhrubajyoti Mukhopadhyay and the president of our Geological Institute, Professor Sankar Bose. After one minute silence in commemoration of the alumni that we have lost this year, the meeting continued with speeches from the President followed by the Host speaking on behalf of the Secretary, the Treasurer, and the Editor of the previous 2024-25 G.I. Committee respectively,

We are also proud to announce the publication of the 65th edition of Bhu Vidya magazine on this auspicious day. As per the annual tradition, the previous committee members have formally handed over their duties to the incoming 2025-26 committee members.

After the completion of the meeting, we were enlightened with the insights that Prof. Pinaki Sar shared with us on the topic "ENIGMA OF THE DEEP LIFE IN CONTINENTAL CRUST." We are deeply grateful to everyone's participation.
