Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), Calcutta This is a Community Page of DMET, Calcutta managed by Alumni It is India's oldest and best known marine engineering college.

The Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), presently known as the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), is India's national institute for the training of marine engineers. MERI offers a four-year Bachelor's degree program in Marine Engineering admissions for which are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) conducted by IITs. The degree was however granted by

the renowned Jadavpur University. Prior to 2000, the four-year course was conducted under the aegis of Director General of Shipping. Based on the recommendations of the Board of Assessment for Educational Qualifications, the Indian Government's Ministry of Education and Culture decided to recognize this course as equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Marine Engineering from 1983 onwards. However, with the establishment of the Indian Maritime University in March 2009, the affiliations for all courses have been transferred to the IMU, which awards its own degrees.

🙏 A Tribute on Engineer’s Day 🙏

An engineer is more than a builder of machines or structures —
he is a dreamer, a problem solver, and a silent contributor to progress. ⚙️✨

From the drawing board to the engine room,
from the classroom to the workshop,
engineers dedicate their skill and spirit to shaping a better tomorrow. 🌍

On this Engineer’s Day, we salute their vision, hard work, and unshakable resolve.

On September 3rd, IMU Kolkata was blessed with an extraordinary musical journey as we welcomed SPICMACAY for an enchanting evening featuring the legendary Pt. Salil Bhatt on the Satvik Veena, accompanied by the gifted Shri Kaushik Konwar on tabla.

🎵 About SPICMACAY 🎵
'The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth' continues to be a beacon of cultural preservation, bringing the timeless treasures of Indian classical arts directly to young hearts and minds. Through their noble mission, SPICMACAY bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, ensuring that the profound wisdom of our classical heritage finds its place in contemporary life.

🌟 Pt. Salil Bhatt - A musical virtuoso of the Bhatt family legacy, Pandit Salil Bhatt has revolutionized the world of classical music with his mastery over the Satvik Veena. He is the son of the fellow slide player and Grammy Award winner, Padmashree Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. His latest album, Slide to Freedom 2 – Make a Better World, was nominated for a Canadian Juno Award.

SPICMACAY believes that classical music is not merely entertainment; it is a spiritual journey, a meditation in motion that purifies the soul and elevates consciousness. In their vision, every raga is a prayer, every taal a heartbeat of the universe, and every performance a sacred communion between the artist and the divine.

We are profoundly grateful to SPICMACAY for choosing IMU Kolkata as a venue for this transformative experience. Such evenings remind us that in a world racing toward the future, the eternal beauty of our classical traditions remains our guiding light, our source of peace, and our connection to the sublime.
