It's that time of the year again, when young budding students decide which college to join, and what course to take up. Having faced the same dilemma 4 years ago around this time, I decided to come up with a short essay on why someone should join CSE at Jadavpur University.
If you are considering CSE at JU, that means you're in the top 200 ranking students of West Bengal, the top .2% students in West Bengal, and you have likely gotten a good rank in JEE Advanced. And there's enough information floating around as to why you should join some IIT or NIT. So I'll focus on why you should join JU CSE.
First of all, let's look at the successes of Students and Alumni. If you look at placements data, you'll see out of 51 students in JU CSE, 48 sat for placements, and 46 students got placed. The best international offer was from Google Singapore, while the best offer Nationally was from Amazon, where 6 students had jobs. Students from JU CSE have been placed in Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Directi, CodeNation, Samsung, Visa, Goldman Sachs and a host of other top International companies with some people getting multiple offers.
People will have already read all of this on the newspaper, but that just talks about what has happened this year. If we look at Microsoft and Amazon hires from 2012 onwards, we'll see a host of people who have gotten promotions in under a year, and some of them who got promoted to Software Development Manager, which is a pretty lucrative post, in under 3 years. The performance of our alumni in the workplace show us that JU not only helps us get great jobs, but the education we get is competitive enough to get fast promotions in extremely competitive environments as well.
Jobs aside, we should next take a look at the Higher Education scenario among alums. Our alumnus is spread across the USA at various campuses and are succeeding. University of California, San Diego, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Michigan, Ann Arbour are just a few places where JU alumni are shining. A quick search on Linkedin will reveal how far JU CSE alums are and how successful they are in their respective degrees. In 2016, we have three students who decided to go for Masters/PhD and have secured funded admits from Universities like RPI, Grenoble and University of Waterloo, among others.
One also has to look at the situation at the internship level. Historically, the last 3 years has seen students from JU go abroad for research internships at reputed universities including Carnegie Melon University, Grenoble in France, and University of Waterloo in Canada. These were funded respectively via the SN Bose scholarship, Charpak Scholarships, and Mitacs Scholarships. If we look at internships in the industry, we need not look beyond top notch companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Yahoo and Samsung to name a few. Most of them managed to secure Preplacement offers at the same companies based on their performance in the companies. Talking about internships at the end of second year, JU CSE has students going out to the IITs, ISI and at Google Summer of Code.
These stats aren't dipping, they're only getting better. More and more companies are coming to JU to hire students for full time positions as well as for internships. It can't be a coincidence that all this is happening. No matter how much you read in the newspapers about political unrest in JU, we manage to balance it out and despite the odds, succeed and succeed in a way that catches the eye of people all around us. If you have qualified for WBJEE among the select few who can make it to JU, don't just decide to go to NIT Durgapur or IIEST thinking there's no political unrest there.. Don't just go to IIT with a subject you aren't fully vested in just to get the IITian tag. If you qualified for CSE at JU, don't just decide to go for IIT/NIT without even considering joining the JU CSE family. There are a lot of reasons to join JU CSE, and this is just the beginning of it all.
