Debate, is a method of interactive and representational argument, in a structure form, where the speaker seeks to prevail in matter of opinion over his audience. It is a special art form of expression which is gradually fading away from our educational institutions, and the image of the debater is being tarnished by political frivolity in the guise of parliamentary democracy. Yet debates are great

fun, both for participants and the audience. It is with an aim to resurrect the debate as an art form of expression of ideas, and to popularize this special skill, that the Calcutta Debating Circle was launched late last year. After all debates form the backbone of the ethos of a parliamentary democracy of which we are an example. Two doctors, a historian, and a journalist all of whom were familiar faces in the Calcutta Debating Circles, joined hands to form this organization. The first debate this Calcutta Debating Circle promoted was the St. Xaviers Inter-College debate and the Calcutta Club-Telegraph debate, each of which was chaired by a founder member of this organization.
