With the Rotating Service Structure rolling back, Space Shuttle Atlantis is revealed on the Mobile Launcher Platform. At the top is the 13-foot-wide “beanie cap,” at the end of the Gaseous Oxygen Vent Arm, designed to vent gaseous oxygen vapors away from the Space Shuttle. Lower is the Orbiter Access Arm with the environmental chamber, known as the “white room,” extended to the orbiter. The chamber provides entry for the crew into the orbiter and also serves as emergency egress up to 7 minutes 24 seconds before launch

What if the best reading coach in your town had a wet nose and never interrupted you?

In Finland, some libraries run “read to a dog” sessions where kids practice reading out loud to a calm, trained dog.

The idea is simple: dogs do not judge, correct, or rush you. That can make it easier for a child to stay focused and feel brave about mistakes.

In Helsinki-area libraries, sessions are often short, around 15 minutes. Kids sit with the dog and handler in a quiet spot and read at their own pace.

These “reading dogs” are usually part of organized volunteer programs. The Finnish Kennel Club describes the dog’s job as being present and helping the reader relax.

For kids who get nervous reading to adults or classmates, a friendly dog can change the whole mood. A small win in a library chair can turn into bigger confidence at school.

This image is shows the last time humans went to the moon. You can see Gene Cernan during the final EVA of humanity's last Moon mission to date. Hours after this photo, Cernan would become the last human to leave footprints on the lunar surface, famously saying: "We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind." 🎥🌕

Cernan and Schmitt spent 75 hours on the surface, conducted three EVAs totaling over 22 hours, collected 115 kg of lunar samples (including orange volcanic soil from Shorty crater), and drove the LRV 35.9 km—all Apollo records. 🚀🛰️

Imagine swimming thousands of miles just to hug one person again.

A Magellanic penguin named Dindim was found in Brazil covered in oil and close to starving. A man named João Pereira de Souza took him in, cleaned him up, and fed him until he was strong again.

Then the penguin disappeared back into the ocean.

But months later, Dindim came back. And after that, he kept returning again and again.

Reports say the penguin swims about 5,000 miles each year from his breeding areas down in Patagonia back to João’s beach in Brazil. He would stay for months, following him around like an old friend.

It’s not a trained animal or a pet. It’s just a wild penguin choosing the same human, year after year.

The story got even more famous when it inspired the film “My Penguin Friend.” It also reminded a lot of people how far one small act of care can travel.

Many living organisms — from animals and plants to fungi and bacteria — survive extreme cold thanks to special molecules called antifreeze proteins. These proteins attach to tiny ice crystals and control how they grow, stopping them from expanding into sharp structures that would otherwise tear cells apart. Instead of simply lowering the freezing point like chemical antifreeze, these proteins reshape ice at the molecular level.

This clever mechanism allows life to function at temperatures where water would normally freeze solid. By precisely managing ice formation, organisms can endure some of the harshest environments on Earth. Antifreeze proteins reveal how evolution has engineered remarkably elegant solutions for survival in extreme cold.

Everyone worships Apollo 11, but this ‘Gumdrop meets Spider’ moment on Apollo 9 quietly decided whether Moon landings were even possible. One wrong move in this EVA, no docking, no Eagle, no ‘giant leap’. Still think test flights are boring? 🚀🧑‍🚀

In this photo, Apollo 9 astronaut Dave Scott is standing in the open hatch of the Command Module “Gumdrop,” partially outside the spacecraft and conducting a stand‑up EVA while still attached to the ship. His crewmate Rusty Schweickart is on the “Spider” Lunar Module porch taking this photograph, and commander Jim McDivitt is inside the LM, as they test rendezvous, docking, and EVA procedures in Earth orbit that would later be used for lunar landings.

Finland is quietly turning everyday kitchen waste into clean fuel. Used cooking oil and greasy fryer leftovers that would normally be thrown away are being collected and refined into renewable diesel. This process transforms waste into a low emission fuel that can be used immediately in existing engines, without any modifications or new infrastructure.

The result is a practical climate solution already working behind the scenes. By converting food waste into usable energy, Finland is cutting emissions while reducing waste at the same time. It proves that the transition to cleaner fuel doesn’t always require futuristic technology, sometimes it starts with what’s left in the frying pan.

At the end of its 6-hour, 4.2-mile circular trek from the Vehicle Assembly Building, the STS-95 Space Shuttle Discovery, still on the Mobile Launch Platform and crawler transporter, sits at Launch Pad 39B. To its left is the Fixed Service Structure that provides access to the orbiter and the Rotating Service Structure. Above it is the 80-foot fiberglass lightning mast that provides protection from lightning strikes. The top of the photo looks west, across the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. While at the launch pad, the orbiter, external tank and solid rocket boosters will undergo final preparations for the launch, scheduled to lift off Oct. 29. The mission includes research payloads such as the Spartan solar-observing deployable spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform, the International Extreme Ultraviolet Hitchhiker, as well as the SPACEHAB single module with experiments on space flight and the aging process.
