Department of Geography, Mirik College Hosts State-Level Seminar on Climate Change and Environmental Issues
The Department of Geography, Mirik College, successfully conducted a one-day State-Level Seminar on the theme “Sustainable Approach to Climate Change and Environmental Issues in Darjeeling Himalayas.” The event was convened and hosted by Dr. Pinki Mandal, Head of the Geography Department.
The seminar began with an inaugural session marked by traditional ceremonies, including the lighting of the Diya. Key addresses were delivered by Mrs. Nima Lama (Teacher-in-Charge), Mrs. Punam Biswa (President, Governing Body), and Mrs. Tanisha Mitra (IQAC Co-coordinator). The session also featured a cultural performance by the students. Two eminent professors were invited by the college to deliver keynote talks.
Dr. Arindam Basak, Head and Associate Professor, Department of Geography & Applied Geography, University of North Bengal, delivered a lecture titled “Climate Change: Its Impact on Agriculture and Human Habitation in Darjeeling Himalayas.”
Dr. Sherap Bhutia, Head and Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Darjeeling Government College, presented on “Dilemma of Sustaining Environment in Darjeeling Himalaya: Issues and Challenges.”
An interactive segment was also conducted for students, addressing syllabus-related queries concerning the FYUGP and CBCS frameworks, where students engaged with the UGBOS Chairperson. Post lunch, the college hosted an Inter-Departmental Poster Presentation Competition,The results of the competition were as follows:
First Place: Siju and Group (Political Science Department) — 12.3/15
Second Place: Ahilsa and Group (English Department) — 12/15
Third Place: Sujal and Group (Geography Department) — 11.2/15.
The seminar concluded on a positive and engaging note, offering an interactive platform for dialogue, learning, and environmental awareness
