General information
The University of Mumbai, earlier known as the University of Bombay, is a premier and one of the oldest (amongst the first three) Universities in India. Established in 1857 consequent upon “Wood’s Education Dispatch” and spread over 243 acres, the university has, over the years grown by leaps and bounds. It operates from 5 campuses, and caters to students from the rural, tribal, urban, and metropolitan areas. The reputation of excellence achieved by the university since 155 years of ceaseless service in the realm of higher education is a powerful indicator of its manifold achievements as the intellectual and moral powerhouse of the society. True to its purpose of offering a rich diversity of curricular options, the University runs 56 Post Graduate Departments in disciplines of Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Fine Arts and Law. Even at the Under Graduate level, there are many courses on offer in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Management Studies, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Aviation and Physical Education. With a view to providing increased access to higher education, an extensive affiliation system operates with the help of more than 700 colleges offering curricula at the Under Graduate and Post Graduate levels. The fact that more than 7,00,000 students from various disciplines are today receiving education at the Under Graduate and Post Graduate levels and the steady pace of increasing student enrollment established by the University over the years are in a sense, a reflection of the relevance of the education imparted. Furthermore, the illustrious alumni of the University include nationally and internationally acclaimed personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, Shri Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Shri Dadabhai Nauroji, Sir Pherozeshah Mehta, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Dr. Homi Bhabha, Shri M. C. Chagla, and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, are adequate testimony of the heights of glory that this university has reached through the sound foundations of education it has laid. The thrust on creating a vibrant academic and research culture has also been exemplified in many ways. Many departments of the University have a ‘Special Assistance Programme” of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the ‘Fund for Improvement of Infrastructure in Science & Technology’ (FIST) programme of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. In addition, there are 83 research institutes recognized by the University. A strong vocational orientation very much in keeping with the nation’s needs is evidenced through employment oriented Courses offered by especially created institutions like the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute, the Garware Institute of Career Development and Vocational Guidance and the like. Extension, a key function of any University apart from teaching and research has also received due attention through the establishment of its Institute of Distance & Open Learning in 1971-72. The fact that every year more than 75,000 students enroll for higher education through the Distance Mode aptly demonstrates the ‘inclusive approach’ successfully adopted by the University. The concept of Community College is being initiated for the first time in the University of Mumbai and has launched its first Four Community Colleges. Through this concept, University is trying to bridge the gap between Industry and the Academy. Human resource requirement of Industry is met by the academic experts in the University. The fact that Quality and Striving for Excellence play a key role in the University’s functioning has been amply illustrated in a variety of ways. It was initially accredited with a ‘Five Star’ status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and has recently been reaccredited with ‘A’ Grade. The University has also been accorded the “University with Potential for Excellence” status by the UGC under which 14 centers including the ‘Center for Green Technology’ have been identified as core center carrying out excellent work in the interdisciplinary areas of Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages and Literature.
