Department of civil engineering is the first department to be set up at NIE. Right from the inception the department provided high quality value based education to the students. The students of the department have consistently bagged the ranks at the university level every year. The department hence boasts of a huge list of highly acclaimed alumni to its credit. s been diligently used to enhance the facilities of different laboratories. At the department a number of programmes are conducted wherein student’s participation is encouraged. The flagship event of the department AAKAR is a biannual activity. NIE Golden Jubilee – Civil Aid Technoclinic endowment lecture is an annual event at the department. The department has made focused effort in carrying out research activity in the field of Structural engineering related to Masonry, Fire resistance, Fibre reinforced concrete, Structural Reliability, Earthquake Engineering and Ferro cement. There is significant research activity taking place in the field of water resources and geotechnical engineering also. In addition to the regular academic activity, the department also offers its services in the form of consultancy and testing to various departmental and private agencies. The quality of services provided by the department is well acknowledged in the professional field. The department has to its credit a number of major sponsored projects like water quality analysis for the Mysore taluk, social audit works related Hirekatte Voddu project, structural designs of various lift irrigation schemes, structural designs of Karnataka slum clearance board. The department has also conducted Feasibility study of buildings at IISC., Bangalore. Further, the department has successfully completed an overseas consultancy project at Kuwait. The entire design and construction of the golden jubilee lecture theatre complex and Diamond Jubliee sports complex was done by faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department. The department has taken up several research projects funded by KSCST/UGC/AICTE. Presently, 1 project funded by VTU is under progress.
